Mike: don't worry im still on the hunt for the main control unit so i haven't forgotten about u buddy.
Craig: thanks for the help and damn were u that bored that u had to stare at it???
TripleGmax: i believe the HUD's came on the '89-'91 GXE models only with the ACC unit as well.
as for goin' over the 125mph barrier which 3rdmaxse0 said it didn't work is maybe because our cars were only meant to go up to 125mph only since the 145mph came only for the '92-'94 VE's and there were no HUD's installed for the VE's so it could be that. now this would be a good question for Craig though.

I'm considering adding black to the seats when I re-upholster the leather. Burgundy seats with black inserts.

talk about bringing this back from the dead. i installed my HUD on an analog cluster. i cared less for the digi dash. all i used were just the HUD and the control unit and Craigs write-up on how he did it. these were only available on the 3rd gens with sonar suspension (bourgham edition or something like that).
LG/R = L14
Illumination control they wire up directly to the brightness switch in the digital dash harness. Also goes to the TCU for what purpose I don't know
a couple of thoughts: the illumination switch/control system is not working properly (assuming you used an appropriate setup)
or
the display is going out; were you able to test it out before you got it? sometimes dimness can be caused by bad solder joints, etc.
