The softest screws I've ever seen

It's little things like this that are annoying about this car. I changed my stock Bose radio and of course the screws would not come off the bracket, the heads stripped instantly, I barely used any pressure. Since that radio was shot I drilled out the screws and was able to use the bracket. Now I'm by-passing the amps because 1 is shot and I dont want to buy any more adaptors. So I was following Craig Braces's directions for removing the door panel (by the way thanks Craig) and the 2 screws holding the handle stripped instantly. Now I dont know how to get these out. I dont want to drill them out if I don't have to because my panel is in perfect condition. Anyone else have a similar problem? 92 GXE by the way/

the screws are an anti-theft feature, the guy at bestbuy had a set of nissan specific bits to get out the screws for the radio.

Get a better screwdriver. No power tools. They are all easy to take off. I have taken apart my dash, HU, and doors and haven't stripped a screw yet. The only issue I had was loosing screws. But those are easy to find. What you want to do is find a drill bit similar to the screw size but only a tad smaller. When you drill they should fall out. If not then get a bigger drill bit.

That sounds crazy unless it was in the later model 3rd gen. I just got mine out with a screw driver.

they're just #2 phillips.... the problem is most people have old, worn out screwdrivers and the screws are in there very tight. you can see where I'm going with this..

best way to get them out in one piece is to use a butane lighter or something to heat up around the screws, then they will come out easier.

I've also found it helpful to use a small (3/32" or so) drill bit and drill through the center of the screws before I try to remove them. it will leave enough of the screwdriver + thing in the center to use a screwdriver, but will make them break loose. I don't know why, but it's worked on every single screw I've done that way.

I tried a brand new #2 Philips head screw driver and the things twisted like lead. Some of the screws are much harder, like the ones holding in the dash and the 2 on the door itself (not the long handle). I will try drilling them out I guess.

had to use an impact driver

on mine, dented the radio.
the rest just took some torque and the correct size screwdriver.

Yeah, I dented my radio as well while impacting the screws out. But it was junk anyway, so I didn't care enough to use the gentle touch!

Just today I pulled out the ****box aftermarket head unit and put in an OEM Bose (which fixed my radio reception problem heh) I had no trouble getting them out with my brand new Craftsman screwdrivers

impact is last ditch, didn't care about the radio.
had a spare bose to confirm the problem (blown amps)
actually my old bose is sitting next to me looking rather forlorn

This works by weakining the screw. it allows it to give towards the center, thus breaking free easier. its a great trick, very useful

Sometimes that's just from the heat as well. on many of the screws, I'll see them pop loose and twist a bit just as soon as the bit gets started in them. sometimes all it takes is a little heat.
