Clutch Replacement Horrors

So today was the day to tear down the VE, and fix the shifting problem (pressure plate related).

There were lots of things that set me back, but one must have been fatal. Not having a manual, my dad and i unbolted the half of the tranny while it was still on the engine. We pulled it apart about an inch and realized that we saw gears and we were foolish.

We pushed that back together, bolted it up and took off the entire tranny. The clutch job went well, and we finally got the tranny back on. We were connecting all the stuff we took off, and systematically checking it for proper function. When i connected the shifter, i decided to check it out and see if it would go through the gears. The shifter was stuck, and wouldn't move much and definately could not get into gear.

We then realized the tranny mounts weren't on yet and maybe they could affect the shifter so we mounted the tranny, and still no shift feel. We connected all necessary hardware to start the motor, and we did so to check in the tranny was working. As i slipped the clutch, the tires were turning, and everything worked beauftifully minus the shifter. The shifter is loose (in neutral position), and the tranny is in gear? Is there a way that by separating the tranny halves, we messed something up (even though we split in only about an inch?). Is there a way to get the tranny into neutral, so the gears can match up. I am really stumped...

I remember when I took off the shifter rod when removing the tranny that the tranny was in gear, so perhaps this is the problem. Thanks for any replies, I am going back to work on it tommorrow. I hate it yet love it at the same time.

wow never thought id read about sombody accidently spliting the trans in the car thinking thats how it came out

to fix this without any previous trans knowledge you will need an FSM which shows the trans break down and you will have to remove the trans and then disasseble it the proper way and put it back to gether the way described in the book. there is a sertain procedure which has to be followed to install the detent *****, shafts, and springs and when you seperated the case they probobly fell out of the place they sit

Yeah, I guess I learned my lesson not to mess with anything vital without a manual. Since I don't really want to deal with rebuilding the thing, we called some shops and I guess autozone has rebuilt trannies for 800. I think that is the way we are gonna have to go, because there was quite a bit of metal in the old oil. It looked incredibly sparkly and had a nice silver and gold(brass) sheen. The old clutch wasn't broken and the old throw out bearing was still intact (had a slight wobble). I'll just say i was due for a rebuild anyway, so the dumba$$ mistake wasn't to bad after all.
