exhaust studs

exhaust studs

any real ways to fix it yourself or any cheap way to do it besides diy. all are broken. dont knkow what to do? Been quoted about 1000 dollars and dont wanna pay. my car sounds like a diesel. Help anyone. will even pay to get it done if reasonable?

Do it yourself. Invest about $150 worth of tools (or less if you buy a right-angle drill adapter instead of a right-angle drill) and a weekend to do the work. I did my rears myself. Do a search for a post I made about it a few weeks back.

Edit: Like the new "sumer rims", had not seen your car with out the Racks.

all are broken??? I dont think its worth it to pay $1000 for exhaust studs. For around $1500 you can get a JDM engine installed. Try doing it yourself..

so i need 12 studs, liquid wrench, washers, and gaskets for the manifolds. anything else.

you forgot the nuts for the studs, you should change those too.

OK so drilling out the exhaust studs, its torture for sure. Its best done with a drill adapter as a drill is too bulky to fit well in the back side of engine bay, and make sure you drill perfectly straight. On the transmision side of the engine the posts are holding in antifreeze so when you drill back to a certain point it leaks out, talked to a mechanic and he said it was normal, so dont freak out like i did when you see coolant dripping at a good pace from the hole.

Please do freak out - they're not holding any coolant for sure. At least for the reason of being way too hot for that. I drilled out 3 of mine and replaced the rest and none were holding coolant. How am I supposed to fix my car at the shop if such 'mechanics' work there?

It is close to impossible to drill straight as the axis of the stud is not horizontal. You need straight angle air drill, I don't think adapter can do that but I never tried adapter myself. It will be VERY helpful if you find left hand drill bit of the neccessary diameter, preferrably made of cobalt steel. Drilling with that might just get your stud out without extractor.

I made myself a template out of thick MDF and put it on the remaining studs and used that as a guide by drilling the hole in MDF where broken stud is. I did it with smaller bit first. It was still PITA.

ya the guy said to use thread sealant and it would work, however it does not, bolted everything back on today and its still leaking, i now need to replace the engine as its too old to justify keeping... any tips on a gxe to se swap??

It's auto, so the swap would probably be super hard, and expensive. However I think it would be worth it, assuming it didn't require heavy customization.
