VTC Issues?
VTC Issues?
Hello, I just bought a 93 Max SE with 90k on the motor. When it starts and occasionally at low RPMs theres a ticking. Could this be the VTC? and if so what can I do to repair it. I haven't tried the yota filter yet. Sorry for such a dumb question, but my last car was a 90 so I didnt have to worry about any of this stuff.

Only the labor is expensive. It is a very time consuming process.
As for the ticking VTCs on startup, if you change the oil every 3k miles and use the Toyota filter, it will likely not get much worse for quite a while.
I would also say that the maintenance isn't easier on a VG. You don't have to worry about T-belts breaking on the VE or replacing them every 60k.
Not to mention adding 30 hp without any mods. Also, I would like to see a non-turbo VG run under 15 seconds in the quarter mile. Until one of you can do that (and show a time slip), zip it about your VG "trashing" VEs.

Before you go to rebuild your VTC try and clean the connection for both of the solenoids. Sounds crazy but I clean mine with some Electrical Connection cleaner and put in some grease for electrical connections and they quit ticking all together. You might as well try it before you go through all of the trouble of a rebuild!
i said my vg could trash my ve. Mainly because i have almost every mod other than a turbo, supercharger, and nos. Plus i already stated ve's have more potential to run faster, but that isnt the case now since my money is in my vg.

It would take numerouse bolt-ons to even get close to that. Not that you don't have a bunch. I just wanted to know what you had in that VG that could possibly shut down a stock VE?
udp, headers, catback, hi-flow cat, computer upgrade, flywheel, CAI, advanted timing, upgraded ignition with nology ignition wires, im probably leaving more out...but yeah a stock ve doesnt stand a chance. Camshaft on the way and im bout to bore out my throttle body....and eventually down the road i will make time to turbo it.
I don't think that's 30hp. But nothing a 1/4 time or a dyno couldn't verify though. Would like to see a good vg dyno. Right now modded VEs are putting down at the wheels more than a VG is putting down at the flywheel.

Im trying to figure out why you would have a VE and a VG but choose to put all of the money into the VG...
The only thing you can get for a VG that you cant get for a VE is headers right?

I agree. I hate to be pessimistic, but I just don't think it adds up.
A dyno slip would be the perfect thing to shut me up, though.

From what I can remember, there hasn't been a NA VG that ran better than high 15s. There are probably a dozen NA VEs that have ran in mid to high 14s.
