Are New Motor Mounts an Upgrade?

Why do ppl replace their motor mounts? Do they go bad? Is it a handling or performance upgrade? How does one know when to replace them?

My motor mounts were broken for a while and I decided to put off fixing them. Then my transmission mount broke because of the broken motor mounts (according to the mechanic). Its not really a performance or handling issue. They are need to hold the motor down. I knew my motor mounts were bad because when I hit the gas to accelerate from standstill, i could feel a shudder when gears changed from 1st to 2nd. Just my opinion. I could be wrong but some of these other guys here know more.

depends what you replace them with with. with age they naturally rot out and some people replace them with OEM style mounts. other people replace them with poly mounts to hold down the motor better which reduces wheel hop during acceleration. but, they also transmit more vibration to the cabin.

Thanks for the enlightenment. Seemed like an odd item to replace, or even post on a modifications list. But for the labor it must take to replace those, I guess thats why.

i've tried fixing mine with polyuerathane, and it works alright, some dude on the org will do a nice quality job for like 40 and shipping. THEREALGOON has some i think. Without good mounts, acceleration sucks and so does the hope of attaining third gear scratch. Here http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=401525

The major thing I noticed was NO MORE WHEEL HOP.

A bad motor mount can cause vibration and bad idle. Its a maintenance item such as control arm bushings. If they are bad get them done.

It also only takes like 10 minutes to replace the front one and 15 minutes for the rear.

1) with bad motor mounts, would it be possible to hear a very annoying rusty screeching sound coming from underneath the car, around the tranny area?

2) with bad motor mounts, would the car hesitate under acceleration even if full tune up has been done, all sensors good, tire pressure good, etc?

could the above be considered as symptoms of bad motor mounts? thx

edit: car idles rough as mentioned above, and when switching the auto gears, the engine bounces in place when going from P to R to D or the other way around. also hear a "GLOCK" sound during gear change

Those are all symptoms of bad mounts but depending on how bad the mounts are. The glock and change from P R D can be due to the engine mounts and tranny mounts being bad. They are bushings and they wear out, they should be changed, cars with our age on them tend to have bad bushings after so many years. Its really maintenance and should be changed. Internetautomart on the forums i'm sure can get good prices on these mounts for the tranny and engine.

Why would I lie about that, it doesn't make any sense to be sarcastic about telling a member how to remove and replace motor mounts. All you do is put a jack to support the crossmember and go to town on the mounts, 10 minutes for the front and 15 for the rear, depends also on how mechanically inclined you are also.

By the way here's my sign to you

Can you please send me pictures of your Laguna Seca Blue Maxima?

TIA,
Diego

Its gross to be honest but its a motorsport color and out of the three it was the one missing to be made. The e30 they used red (brillianrot or hellingrot) The e36 (daytona violet) and e46 (laguna seca). They had to do it.

The black one is not my car, its a friend of mine. Pics of my m3 are not up, just of the headlights, i need to some work to it but its real nice. Please don't do the laguna also.

The maxima has been good, I had a hesitation problem with it but the knock sensor and harness was replaced and never had the problem again. Car just hit 102,000 miles. My brother gave it to me when I was a senior in High School one of the best cars I've owned but the minute I drove the m3, I regret ever spending a dime on the maxima. **** happens you move on to better things in life.

i figured it wasn't yours, but nice headlights

who knows, i may try it later on if i have the spare cash.. the color really intrigues me for some reason, especially putting it onto the 3rd gen. im looking for a low mileage VE to do seriose work on, but from the looks of it, i will probably go JDM/5spd swap on this GXE. will probably be a better deal. then i'll think about the paint.

and i see u know ur bmw stuff. messed up how they are getting rid of the E46, eh? i would say that they hit the styling limit with that car. changing it would just spoil the beauty in my opinion

For both, but like I said it matters on the person doing it and how mechanically inclined one is.
