anyone with a junker want to try this?

Dunno if this thread is even legal for the board, but if anything is found unacceptable, please delete it as it was meant to be purely informational and just tossing ideas out there.

I came across this idea posted on the net a while back, like 2-3 years ago, but never though much of it, but now with the gas prices rocketting, maybe it's time to get a little drastic?

anyway, is there anyone out there with a junker VG or VE that will be going to the junkyard soon that is still able to run want to try this and tell us the result?

Anyway, read on:

http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/toluene.html

http://www.team.net/sol/tech/octane_b.html

and if you can google or yahoo, you can probably come up with a lot more

why bother? put timing to stock, fill with 87 octane, and don't worry about it.

Once I boost, I plan on using a 100 or so octane mixture using toluene if gas prices are still this high.

maybe my car is messed up.. but when the weather gets hot, the car runs crappy. at around 13-22c* the car runs best on 89, even 87..

anything above 25c* the car runs crappy on 87.

i think i read somewhere that for every 10C* increase in ambient temprature u require 1 octane number up from what it would require at a lower temprature..

the ECUs in these cars are designed to be able to run on 87. they just retard the timing a bit and it's all good. no, they may not run the best on it, but they will still run without damage.

dood.. put down the crack pipe. you won't be able to drive the car if you do that. $4 a gallon for gas, plus toluene isn't cheap at all. and only going up since it's a petroleum product as well.

"once I boost"...you make it sound like it's an overnight project. by the time you "boost" gas prices might be a bit lower.

might as well run straight toluene.

Dude...you guys need to put down the hater-rade. I know that it's not an overnight project; I have been getting the pieces together for a month. so far I have the manifolds, a couple of LSD trannies, and 550 cc injectors. Waiting on a new job to provide a boost in income so I can complete it (I know what is involved). How won't the car be driveable? I can use live edit and hop on a dyno and get a program just for the higher octane. As it is I can get a 55 gal drum of 104 octane for 200. Now convincing my parents to let me keep a potential bomb in their yard.....

please tell me you aren't dropping every last cent you have into the car? Otherwise you are going to turn up like some of the members in teh past where they have to sell all their mods just to play for a tranny rebuild or something.

modding + parents generally doesn't work well, atleast if you have to mention them. I remember when I left an empty nitrous bottle at my Mom's house, Jimmeny Crickets I thought someone died I've never heard screaming/yelling so loud. (she thought it was going to explode ).

My friend is a welder; he told me that he would help out. There is also a local shop that is good with custom setups. I live with my parents for free room and board thus more money in my pocket. I won't have to pay for a tranny rebuild because my friend can do those, and as i stated I have an extra one. I have an extra engine waiting for me in Muskogee if need be as well. While I'm waiting on more money I am researching and I will develop the skills, and my friends have the tools. It won't be fun, but it should happen within three months; I'll post pics for the skeptics when/if the time comes.
