not to sound short, but how can you get the same effects as a CAI by just removing the bottom of your air box? the best thing that you will get from this is more of a growl, no HP increase. , and you wont be intaking cold air just hot ambient air from the radiator, and engine. Nothing CAI in that set up. If you check some of the CAI install guides like, Warpspeed you will see the difference

An alternative is to just replace the pipe with some metal pipe, but this is cheaper.
And actually better unless you have a 4" metal pipe. The stock tube is 4", and most aftermarket pieces are 3" mandrel.

Here's a video clip of my intake, Ractiv filter w/ 3" mandrel pipe. The top end of the RPM range just makes me

We need to go a little more in depth here...

Ok, so the resonator is that big plastic thing that hangs off the flex portion of tube between the TB and the MAF... right? Concerning removing it, what purpose does it serve being there? I always thought it was for moisture collection or something.

Does anyone have a pic of an intake sans resonator? I'm a little confused on how you're "plugging up" the hole where the resonator was.

Cripes. Take flexy mid pipe off w/ resonator. Uugly plastic blob. You might have to remove some bolts, I forget. Loosen clamp that holds resonator. Remove resonator assembly. Plug the hole that's left with a cap from a rattle spray paint can. DONE

Then just leave it. Won't do anything for performance.

i have the warpspeed y-pipe and 2-1/2" exhaust into a hi-flow muffler. my intake is currently having the finishing touches put on, but i have a short aluminum tube going straight to the sensor to a cone. i made my own heat shielding, but now my intake is facing the wrong direction. derrr.

if anyone is interested in a CAI for a 91-93 accord in a black finish, which will work for a 3rd gen Max, I'll sell it for what i paid $37. there is nothing wrong with it the diameter is about a inch smaller than the one i have i just wanted it since it is one piece. i did notice a small decrease in power compared to what i have already only had it on for about maybe a hours worth of driving time. so if anyone's interested email me. this is a pic of just the pipe

So loco7, are you saying that the accord intake felt like it had less power, or just the one you had that was a samller diameter, than the one currently on the car?

I added a KN Filter that just fit into the stock box. It helped some in performance, but the MPG dropped by about 1MPG. Would it have been better to get a cone filter or some adapter so that the stock box os replaced by a filter. 91 Maxima SE

what i am saying is i have a CAI for my car that is i think 5" and this one i bought for the accord is 3" and on acceleration it doesn't feel like i have as much punch compared to what i had with the 5" CAI. but it don't feel stock either way and it still sound good. although i think the 5" has a better roar but that's my opinion!
