Remote keyless entry?

Remote keyless entry?
How would one go about installing a remote keyless entry system into our cars? I'm not talking about the space age GXE type-the-code-in-the-door deal, but a key fob that opens the doors. So I don't have to stick my key in the door anymore. Perhaps makes a nice sound when they are locked as well. Has this been done? I'm not so interested in a spending a lot of money, so the cheaper the better. Thanks!

Just get a car alarm for example http://clifford.com/main.asp. As for installing it if you can solder, have a fsm, time, 4 6-packs of beer you can do it! In a nut shell you'll have a brain that you use relay's and have to connect wire's (# depending on unit) tied into your car's lighting, power locks, door pin.

Yeah, any aftermarket alarm should do fine. You don't need to get a fancy one with alot of bells, since you can interface it with the stock alarm system, which has all the sensors already. That's what I did. I set it up so that the aftermarket alarm arms/disarms the stock one as well, and the stock alarm would let the aftermarket alarm's brain know if there was any trouble. You have to wire in a couple of diodes to the stock alarm's arm/disarm wires to activate it. I can send you wiring codes if you need it. Remote entry really is a nice feature to have.

I got a Commando unit and only wired the part that made the doors work and the horn chirp when used. Worked great. Couldn't find the brown wire that would make the trunk pop work FTL. Sold car later, but the fob worked great.

Ideally, all you need the aftermarket one to do is open and close the doors, and pop the trunk, while the stock one does the monitoring.

it's pretty easy to make a T harness for yourself. I made one for LordRandall before Bulldog started selling them. Just go to a junkyard and cut the ignition harness out from under the steering column and you'll have both connector ends that you need. Then do some soldering and plug it in. But like they said, you'll still need to make several other connections besides the +12,ACC,IGN, and START.
It's not that hard and if you search, there is LOTS of info posted on this subject with detailed info posted by myself and others
