Checking ABS error code

Checking ABS error code
I have a problem with ABS that starts firing when the car slows down. I thought maybe sensors are dirty and cleaned them all but no luck.
Sometimes, the ABS light comes on and I think my best bet is to check the error,
how is it done in a 93 GXE? any easy way with a multimeter?

If yours is anything like my 92 SE, the ABS brains are in the trunk. It's a box hanging under the rear window shelf, on the passengers side. If you look closely, you will see a small opening with an LED inside. If you get an indicator of ABS failure on the dash, stop the car, but leave it running and check the box for flashing of this LED. It will flash so many long and so many short flashes. This indicates the code. This code can be found in the stickys or on the Autozone website, I believe. Mine activated when I turned to pull into a parking place. It turned out to be a bad wire connection in the sensor. I replaced the sensor (easy, but not cheap) and it completely cured it.

The ABS module is in the trunk, it's silver, up on the right on the underside of the parcel shelf, where the speaker is. If you look up at it from underneath, there is a small glass dot, which is the diagnostic led. This will blink repeatedly, with the number of times being the error code:
1-4,9,10: solenoid
5: left front wheel sensor
6: right front wheel sensor
7: right rear wheel sensor
8: left rear wheel sensor
16: control module itself
I had the same problem, turns out one of the wheel sensors had rusted up inside. If it is one of the wheel sensors, check to see if it's resistance is between 0.8-1.2KOhms (at the wheel sensor harness). Good luck.

thanks guys...
the light comes on sometimes and obviously goes away when the car is restarted. but the problem of ABS firing when coasting down to 5mph is there all the time. I thought Nissan units like Mitsubishi clea the light if it things the problem is gone but atleast store the code.
I have to wait for the light to come on. which happens randomly and once in a while to check.
It is quite clearly a wheel sensor issue, be it sensor, ring or wiring. I installed a new balljoint not a long time ago and the stud rubbed against the ring and scored it deep. but I doubt that is it.

I mixed up the codes with the engine control unit. For the ABS they are all the same length and you just count them. The darned codes are erased when the engine stops, so you must catch them without shutting off the engine or they go away. I had one instance of getting an ABS code when mine were misbehaving, since the bad connection was intermitant when I turned the wheels hard. Try cleaning the sensors and rings, but it sounds like a bad sensor. They get weak, especially at low speeds and give a signal, but it's not correct. Put a multimeter on the sensor connectors ( back of rear axle and in rear engine compartment corners) and check for the resistance indicated it this last post. Also, wiggle the wires. Mine read O.K., but the reading on the drivers side one jumped all around when wiggled.
