Black Chamber on Intake?

I'm curious. I can speculate but I want to hear a direct affirmative answer.
On my 93 VE. After the MAF sensor, on the intake, there is another part that sits under it suspended and is completely sealed. I dont think it could be a dust catch, because 1) any dust would be filtered before it got there and 2) if the filter was damaged or not there the flow of air would be so fast that most of the dust would enter the engine anyways. I dont think it would be a water trap because of "1" again. the filter should sop up and trap most of it within the black box.

A chamber. Aha. Theyre used in car audio sub boxes. Theyre also used in HVAC systems and/or generators. Im curious if it is there as a plus? Or if it is there to compensate for something wrong with the engine. If anything, I think my throttle lag is because it is trying to suck air but the intake is being slowed by 1) the resistance of the filter, 2) the vacuum created by trying to suck from the enclosed chamber and 3) the smaller diameter point of entry.

Has anyone removed this part from their VE engine? Perhaps placed a high-temp PVC cap to seal it off instead?

Hope I can get a good answer. Itd be good to know if it is extremely vital. It appears ample room was left during engineering to allow for this part to be there. Doesnt seem like an afterthought. Although those guys are clever..

If nobody has done so, I'll cap it and see if theres a difference. I have faith that somebody in here must have tried this.. Most of you are much smarter than I am when it comes to tinkering.

It's called a resonator...Yes you can remove it and seal it...It's only purpose is to quiet the intake airflow....

HA! It makes noise, as resonators do in exhaust systems. My GXE didnt have it and I never heard the intake noise. In the VE I can hear it with the window down. I'm capping it today. What diameter is it? 3" Do you know exactly?

Did your gxe have the stock intake???

The diameter is 2 1/4 inches..

Aye. It was identical in length and position (I think) Minus that chamber below. Thats why when I was cleaning my MAF sensor I noticed it and had to disassemble it to take a peek. At first I thought it was there to gain cooler air from below as well as the front because its DOHC (GXE was SOHC of course) but I didnt feel an opening under it. But then I thought that there wasnt a filter for it, that I knew of. And there was bound to be more crap being sucked up from under the car than what would come in through the grille or the sliver of a gap in the hood. Oddity.. Probably increases airflow for cooling the engine without it there.
