Steering Question

My max turns fine. But it is leaking fluid from the rack, hose and pump.
But works fine.. very tight and responsive.

Im looking at a Max for my fiance. Its a GXE, but there is alot of play in the steering wheel. Dead center, I would say it has about 4" of play total. 2" in either direction while im turning. It turns fine, no sounds, maybe a little leaky fluid (but i would expect to at least replace the steering fluid line, as I am going to on mine). But that play.. Is that just an adjustment? Or is there maybe air in the system? I think its just something in the column that needs tightening. Ive never done any work on the steering assembly.

Anyways, Its a good deal, needs an injector set, but I have one already.

PS: To Internetautoparts, how much can you get me the front window gaskets, and the driver side handle and plastic cover for the whole window-button pod on the door. The black plastic is cracked and something is not supporting the button assembly underneath. The front window buttons are accessible but they go down into the pod when you press them. The rear window buttons you really have have to dig your fingers in there to actuate them. Oh and the rear-right window regulator w/motor again. Damn maximas..

I'd check the rack bushings, and for all the door odds and ends, those are JY or OE only AFAIK

Rack bushings. Ok will do. How serious could the steering play be? You think I would have to replace the rack maybe?

I also wondered...my cars(GXE) steering is a bit smoother and softer than the girls (SE)..hers is stiffer (nice sporty feel) BUT makes a groaning sound sometimes and the turning radius is ****ty. I have a feeling her R&P is bad..anyone can verify by described symptoms? or does it sounds ilke PS pump?

groaning normally is the pump.

the rack bushings are sold seperately from the rack though if you are replacing the rack you should also replace the bushings at the same time
