3rd gen vg manifold set up

Well im trying to see if the 3rd gen VG pacesetter headers or cattman headers will fit even with a little modifying or and extension.

On the 2nd gen the manifolds connect to eatch other above the tranny .

could any one help me out with some 3rd gen manifold / exhaust pictures?

It would be even cooler if you have headers and have pictures.

Thanks!

What exactly are you trying to do? Put headers on a 2nd gen? I'll tell ya straight up, no one on here has anything good to say about thr aftermarket headers for our engines.

Well the 300zx guys who specilize in the vg engine n/a and turbo say that headers will deff free up some power.

both cattman and pacesetter.

Yeah im trying to put headers on my 2nd gen 88 w block VG.

Untill i have the money for a turbo setup.

The fittment sucks and they are low quality. The 3rd gen manifolds arent really all that bad flowing, the Y pipe is. A set of 3rd gen manifolds and a warpspeed Y pipe should be a upgrade over a 2nd gen setup.

Just like your turbo sudgestions you need to keep in mind the FWD VG is positioned 90deg diffrently then a Z31 or Z32 so alot of their sudgestions arent as helpful.

I spoke with Dallas at Warpspeed about this. According to him the factory manifolds actually flow pretty well.

And Pacesetter does not have a great reputation.

Go with the 3rd gen manifolds and the WSP or Cattman y-pipe.

doesn't work like that.
the "headers" have their own y-pipe included because the factory one won't bolt up to them, so an aftermarket one won't either

I've read somewhere on the org that the pacesetter headers turn flaming red or something...not normal right?

yeah i was thinking about it last night , I would have to make an extension for the egr or just take it out completely , And run an extension for the 02 sensor.

what do you guys think?

Well actually the 2nd gen doesn't have the same exahust collector as the 3-gen. Each exhaust manifold dumps into a Y collector alot better than the 3-gen. Probably not to much to be gained at the Y either.

I looked into headers about 6 years ago. On our engine, it is consistent the response that headers are pointless. The one and only reason is that they are just too short to make a difference. That is again why everyone goes with the Y-pipe which is longer. The stock y-pipe bends are horrible.

I'm not sure why you couldn't swap out to a 3rd gen exhuast setup: manifolds and aftermarket y-pipe, then connect to your current muffler system. It's been about 8 years since I owned my '87 Max, but I can't think of any reason why you couldn't do this. My confusion though is WHY are you doing this?

3rd gen exhaust manifolds won't fit (no room), unless you converted to a remote oil filter. Even then I'm not sure there is enough room to clear the firewall and driveaxle as well. However as for someone saying headers are pointless that is clearly a lie. A correctly designed header will make alot more power than the stock manifolds will. The problem is no one bother to do any R&D on it.
