UDP post-install question...

I installed my UDP last night and today, but when i reset the timing and got the car running it runs like poop... it idles rough and even seems like it has less horse power and torque!?!?!

Is this normal for the breakin period? or am i totally screwed?

Thanks for opinions,
Alex

the pully can be swapped without messing with the timing belt or crank sprocket. if you replaced the belt while you were in there, it's possible you're off a tooth or something. pully wouldn't make it idle like junk.. i wouldn't say you're totally screwed, but it's definitely not normal.. you might have to dig back in..

I was talking about timing belt teeth, not related to the pully. I'm wondering what you meant by "reset" your timing. you don't have to mess with your timing to swap pullies.

Well when i was doing it with my friend, we opted to just use the break and not take the starter off, so sometimes we forgot to push the break in so the udp would move, i thought this would throw the timing off so i did the thing where you take out plug 1, then turn the UDP until the #1 piston reaches the top, then take the distributor out and set it so it is aligned with #6 and i got it to start but it runs like poop and it seems like there is less horse power.

I didnt mess with the timing belt, i mean i dont even know how to change one.

But i started to advance and retard my timing after driving for about 20 - 30 minutes and it seemed to run better in neutral when turned to the left from center (so advanced i think), but i dont know about driving.

Also when i would rev hard from neutral there was this loud screching (sp?) sound, and im not sure where it came from.

I did take the radiatior hose off during the install to get some more room and lost some radiator fluid that i never put back, would this cause my radiator fans not to spin?

Sorry aboout all the questions
Alex

WTF?
you shouldn't have had to mess with any of that stuff to install the pulley.

1. remove drive belts.
2. remove bolt from crank pulley.
3. slide crank pulley off (use puller as necessary).
4. slide UDP on, aligning the woodruff key in the slot.
5. torque crank bolt on UDP.
6. reinstall belts.

There's no requirement of adjusting timing in there at all..

If you removed the distributor, then most likely you're going to be one tooth off.
use the notch on the crank pulley to show you were TDC is. don't guess at it by using a screwdriver down the plug hole. it's just not accurate enough to set the timing. you could be 10 degrees either way from TDC and not even know it.

No, just set the #1cyl to TDC on the compression stroke, and take the distributor and cap off. Then put the rotor facing #1, put both back on, and check the timing with a timing light.

You may need to do this few times. But what made you think you needed to take the distributor off and move the rotor in the first place??
