Is there something to avoid the VTC failure, some maintenance tips, or is it something unavoidable?
I got 93k on my Max but doesnt sounds bad, unless you get your ear very close to the motor....
Thanks

I don't know if you prevent VTC failure but there are somethings you should try. First off nissan uses a special oil filter for the VE30DE so use only nissan (or toyota equal oil filters ). From what I understand the oil gallies get clogged and cause the failure. You can try to clean the gallies and use only synthic oil. Otherwise you can deactive the VTC soleinods.

You'll know if your variable valve timing system is bad. The tick is very noticeable.

If you decide to rebuild them, GET THE NISSAN SERVICE BULLETIN FIRST!! I did not and mine are REALLY bad now. The gear inside seems like it could go in any which way and not effect anything but it does matter. Get the bulletin and you will see what I mean. My max is parked right now because of this and I've got no time to fix it. If you don't have the bulletin I can email some scans I made of it.

The following was advised to me from a very good nissan mechanicWith pretty good sucess)

Use only 5w30 oil and change every 3k (absolute max)miles. I use only mobil 1 with oem filters. Actually at that frequent change Mobil 1 might be a waste, but I've had my max since it was 2 years old. With an older car it is possible to worsen oil leaks by switching to synth. Also it wouldn't hurt anything to do a motor flush or 2.

The VTCs usually fail due to clogging of the oil galleries and subsequent oil starvation.
