Does anybody have an old VTC spring laying around?

It's such a huge difference compared to what I got. There MUST be a VTC rebuild kit that superceded another! I certainly got the older kit.
Do you have a Cali spec 1992 Maxima?

Well I'm not sure, it was bought originaly in Texas, but I think I have run into error codes that are cali-spec only(can't remember off hand what they were). But considering the car spent most of its life in California and was always dealer serviced I don't know what was done to it. Actually I have all the records of everything done to it in a 2" thick folder but thats alot to wade through
EDIT: I think my vin says it isn't cali though, but i don't remember what the code was for that.

That makes me wonder. When you ordered your VTC rebuild kit, did you give them your VIN or did you tell them you were Cali spec? What information did you provide them when ordering the kit? Where did you get it from?

When I ordered the kit I just gave them the part number(13072-97E00). I ordered it through my local dealer and the parts manager had never heard of this before. And that was the other thing I recognized I do have a egr temp sensor, so it is cali spec I guess but I think my vin says otherwise.

If it ends in "V", then it's Cali spec. If it ends in "U", then it's non-Cali spec.

when did you do these? about a year or two ago? (from your mileage)
you told them that p/n?
and you got the part...that easy
thanks for the p/n if so

If so, then it doesn't sound like the taller ones Josh got. The taller ones should measure over 2.80".

(If the springs are improved, which I don't believe they are, maybe you somehow got new old stock, but in that case they couldn't be the rebuild kits. Besides factory springs lasted longer than 1000miles. My money is on either your assemblies are worn out (lowering the spring rate) or you got used springs (maybe an employee switched them, maybe someone returned them and the parts guys were none the wiser, etc).

You think Nissan makes those springs?

Bump
I found this on a generic auto forum:
At the time of this posting, I have my 94 Maxima SE's engine
disassembled because of what everyone told me, was the VTC problem.
This car was manufactured in February 1994.
When I was lining up the marks in the timing chain before removing the
VTC, I noticed that the camshaft chain tensioner was not keeping tension
and as the camshafts rotated, the valve springs would force the
camshafts to spin and take the chain slack, and when they did so, the
chain would generate the dreaded "VTC noise". These tensioners are
hydraulically operated and this would explain why it takes some time for
the noise to disappear after starting the engine. Part Nos. for the
tensioners are 13070-97E10 for the Right Hand side (closer to the
firewall), 13070-97E16 for the left hand (closer to the front of the
vehicle).
I am now waiting for the camshaft chain tensioners to arrive from
1stnissanparts.com.
Do you guys think this explains the inconsistencies regarding the symptoms people describe and/or why sometimes grounding the VTC's doesnt work?
Aaron, did you do yours yet?
I'm about to order rebuild kit(s), but I sure wish there was a way I could make sure to get the longer/stiffer springs. Heck, I think if I could buy whole new assemblies (are there even any around) I would

I think the clacking of a loose chain would be far different than VTC clacking.
By the way I just did the rear VTC on Monday so I can still measure the old spring if needed, although I dont have any tools to measure it to as high a precision as Josh. Let me know...
Oh, and my front VTC was louder and made noise more often than the rear, the old spring in it was far shorter than the old spring in the rear.

That's what I'm going to do. I will not try the shorter spring again after the VTC tick came back in less than 1K miles! You have no idea how bummed out I was after doing all this work for nothing.

But 1K miles is the fastest anybody has ever heard of. I am VERY sure I did the actual rebuild correctly. But I didn't clean the oil gallies or replace tensioners or guides. I have been using 5w30 Mobile 1 sythetic for a while now. Back when I did the rebuild, I was using 10w30 Castrol GTX.
I will do the VTC rebuild once again. But I will make sure the springs are the longer ones plus I'll clean the oil gallies.

Thats funny, I ran Castrol GTX 20w50 for a while and just now switched to the Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic since both VTCs have been rebuilt and I want to treat the engine better. So if my VTCs fail now I'll now that this oil is to blame, and will switch back.
My front is a five weeks old now, 2200 miles, mostly highway.

Yeah, I would stick with what Nissan recommends.... 5w30 in colder climates and 10w30 in normal/warm climates.
I am in NC. I don't need 5w30 for daily driving. In fact, 10w30 would be best. But I only put in 5w30 just to squeeze out that extra hundredth of a HP since I launch my car at a cool temperature.
20w30 is definitely too thick when the motor is cold. Once it's warmed up, then it's the same.

Sorry for bumping an older thread. But I'd like to add some new information for those that like to search.
Anyway, I recently bought new VTC springs. I was able to get them measured before ordering and these are definitely taller than the measurements Josh and lanedrifters gave me.
The new springs I bought both measure exactly 2.761" in height.
Josh's old springs measured 2.585" and 2.611". Lanedrifter's old springs measured 2.625" and 2.623". My new springs are over an 1/8" taller.
I might do the rebuild along with the tensioners that I bought within the next few months. I'll be sure to bump the thread again once I rebuild them and have results to share.

Your dealership probably won't have this kit in stock. Just make sure you have the part number when you contact them b/c it's not a part that they can look up in the parts department. It's a service part.
If they are nice, ask them to measure the new spring before you pay. Just make sure it's longer than 66 or 67mm. The new ones should be just over 70mm.
