I am seriously thinking of another more efficient car. I’ve looked at the Toyota Yaris, (I know your all thinking what the hell) But those little cars get 38 to 40 mpg off 87 octane. I’ve seen couple with 17' , spoiler and lower I must say they look pretty sport for $11,750 new. They have a small 1.5L 4 banger that puts out 106whp and with a turbo that little engine is capable of 185whp. The car only weighs about 2,000 pounds.
So think I should keep maxima and keep driving it with high gas prices? Or sell maxima use it as down payment on yaris...

I kind of tried the same thing when I got my MR2 Spyder. The one thing you need to take into account is payments. You'll likely be spending more money per month for quite a while getting a new car unless you're able to purchase it outright.

First - you have to put $5000 down. then you still have to pay $100 per month. The gas savings to you is 150 miles/20 miles(maxima) - 150/40 ( yaris) = 3.75 gallons per week @ $3 for a grand total of $11.25 per week or about $50 per month.

In my opinion, because of the age of our 3rd gens, the best thing to do is to keep them and drive them till they die. If you trade it in, they will give you $500 for it. If you sell it by owner, you could probably get between $1500-$2500 for it depending on its condition and mileage. The 3rd gen doesn't get the greatest gas mileage but it isn't bad. Keep in mind that instead of saving money on gas, you will end up loosing money when you have to make car payments for a few years. Besides, there are much better cars than the Toyota Yaris. If I were you, I wouldn't buy a brand new car because it is cheap. Instead, you should look into a late model used car. For example, you could probably get a 2006 Honda Civic for about that price and the Civic gets 30 City/40 Highway and it has 145HP. This is just my 2 cents. Do whatever makes you happy.

Here's a simple equation:
Cost of Maxima + Sumation(Filling up at the pump per visit) + Insurance + Maintainence = Total Long term cost
vs.
11,750 + Car's interest + Sumation(Filling at the pump per visit) + Insurance + Maintainence = Total Long term cost
Which one's cheaper?
One Nissan Salesman tries to get me to sell my Maxima and buy a new one.
I'm said "I love my car"
"Yeah but it costs to maintain it"
"Yeah, unless I have to spend $10,000 to fix it, I would consider a newer car"
"Why?"
"Because it cost just as much to buy a new one."
Basically people live too much on the short term and not thinking about the long term.
I still haven't met the 7000 mark on costs on my car.

That's cheap compare to L.A. and in Cali,
Prices are close to 3.50 for 89

I was thinking about getting a $200 sentra/stanza earlier and gutting it (lighter/better mpg). But $400-500 (if there are any problems) buys alot of gas and then Id have 3 cars...
But that would be a good option for you, if theres room for one more at your house. Get a small car like a sentra, gut it minus the seats make sure the plugs/wires/etc are all good then drive it. Save the max for a nice car.
Really though, just keep the maxima. I'm going to start working on tuning my ecu leaner in every part of the power band, to save gas that way. I'm hoping it'll work on most maxima's.

dont nknow about your town or state but in Pa they require full cover on a financed car so you might wann look into that as well

Nforce..I understand you're frustrated with all the recent things that happened to your car,but just step back and think about it,you are obviously able to work on a vehicle,[removing the trans by yourself] so now, just take the time to do your research on how to fix the problems at hand with your car,use search for questions first,if you can't find the answers there, then post Q's on getting it all back together correctly..Then you will have a nice/running car that is PAID FOR
Do not a$$ume you are doing it right, research research research..Then fix..

Both the cost of the car and increased insurance rates negate any benefit from the increased gas mileage. Adding a turbo will also eliminate any benefits and you really wont be going any faster -at least by any worthwhile amount.
IMHO gas mileage shouldn't be a deciding factor on a car. Yes gas is more expensive than ever right now and isn't going to go down anytime soon but the higher fuel economy is on the priority list the less likely you are going to be happy with the car-especially when you don't accelerate and drive like a tortoise to achieve those ratings.

my mount was completely gone so instead of spending 40 for a new one i made a wood spacer a 32nd bigger than the mount hole. and wedged it in there. and 4k miles later still there a little play in it now but better than the old mount.

I crunched some numbers a while back to see if it was worth it to get rid of my Trailblazer in favor of a nice sedan like a G35, Avalon, AV6, etc. TB does about 16 / 19, those cars could do 20 / 27+. It MIGHT save me a car payment a year. Definitely not worth it for a more expensive vehicle and I would lose the utility value of a 4WD SUV. (Towing, cargo room, etc)

"Yaris" sounds like a part of the female anatomy...your idea is whack, dude...Right now I'm toying with the notion of purchasing a C4 'vette for a year or so until I can afford a new GTO w/o plummeting further into debt. Yes, gas is expensive, but I don't care! I'll be damned if the oil companies are gonna force me into some bullsh!t subcompact...
