The cigarette lighter in my car does not work, the clock does but the cig lighter, on the other hand, does not. Any suggestions on finding out problem?

Clock has nothing to do with the cigarette lighter. But if you want to use it so bad, then either push it in and hold it for about 5 seconds or if that doesn's work, just buy a box of matches or something. Problem solved.

The plugs on the back of the lighter socket may not be attached,maybe due to a previous owner forgetting to hook them back up or something,so check them first.

its not that i want the cigarette lighter, i want the electric power for stuff i bought for the car. it doesnt work unless there is a lighter for electricity. Itrs not the fuse, ive replaced it 2x to make sure and its not that. So i guess ill try the 2 wires in the back

If the wires are intact,check the larger harness plug with a multimeter to make sure it has power going to it(remember to turn the key to the on position when checking)

If there is juice to the wires,then i would replace the lighter assembly.

Damn that's harsh, man. The guy said "cigarette lighter", I didn't know he meant the whole outlet. Other than that, care to elaborate where else I went wrong?

Hmmm, shot in the dark, but i know with my lighter.. if i pushed it in ALL the way, it wont get hot enough to light up a cigarette.. It doesnt "click, pop" nothing.

BUT, if i manually hold it about half way in, for say 5-10 seconds, it gets hot enough to light a cigarette..
might as well try that before going thru all kinds of wiring.

well once i had a bronco that the cigarette lighter wouldn't ever work, i spent over 300 bucks running diagnostics at the dealer. 3 months after giving up. there was a penny in the back of it. -.-

but i see what you mean. It's just... who really uses that thing for a cigarette. In my life i have seen it used once. It was my lighter too, for a friend whose lighter ran out of fluid. But other than that it seems they are almost exclusively used for electricity, and commonly called "outlets" in new cars rather than "lighters" because lighters are now optional equipment.

If the fuse and wire work normal, it must be the lighter broken. I just repaired it. Because it is hard to remove the lighter from the cover board, you just need remove the iron inter. 1. disconnect the wire from back, then unscrew the small screw on the bottom back of the lighter barrel to remove the insulator stone and iron inside the barrel.
2. using a small screw driver lift the two clip inside the iron barrel, then lift the clip on top of the lighter barrel, then pull out the barrel.
3. replace the barrel and insulator stone as well as iron connects using a new set, then connect the wire and try.

I didnt want to make a new thread, but my cigarette lighter isnt working. IF I use it as a cigarette lighter and push it in, it blows the 15amp fuse everytime. If I plug my phone charger into it, I have to turn it a certain way for it to get power and charge my phone. Anyone have any suggestions? I want to use it as an electrical outlet more than a cigarette lighter.

My Nintendo DS car charger, eventually blew the fuse out of my car everytime I pulled my DS in. So I got a new one. Now I have no problems using the cigarette lighter as a charging port. It could be an issue with your charger.

Thats maybe what I will have to do, go get a new one. I wanted to be able to charge my camcorder in the car and it wouldnt work, so i guess ill grab one from the JY.

For all the non-smokers - STFU - jeez - we ALL will DIE - get over yourselves.

For the OP - if your problem still exist - follow this trouble shooting method -
1. Remove the lighter assembly form the car - wire a ground and a + wire with a 15amp inline fuse - go directly to battery with these, test lighter outlet (either with phone OR the cigarette lighter. IF the lighter/test passes - then put the lighter assembly back in place -
2. TAKE both the + and ground from the original assembly and test the wires - checking for outputs - also follow those wires as far into the dash as you can see - and look for breaks or crack in the covers.
3. If the wires look good and give out 13.5V with car running and 12V with car off (but key in Accessory position), then reassemble the whole lighter and retest for voltage -- ground is the 'outer ring' that you can see, and the + is in the center bottom -
4. If all test pass - then your problem in the dash wiring - which is beyond where I've been in my Maxima as yet.

Yikes, lots of hate for the smokers - glad I quit 12+ years ago! Anyways, I've tried all the recommendations above and pretty much decided the outlet just needs to be replaced. There's good power at the harness plug, no fuse-blowing, and I just can't get steady juice through it. It'll power intermittently, but I'm tired of wiggling the thing constantly to keep my GPS charging while in use.

All that being said, does anyone have a good online link for sourcing a new (old stock) lighter assembly? I'd rather avoid the local yards...don't feel like having a repeat issue down the road.

check your connectors on the rear of the cig lighter maybe you have a bad ground plug

^^^ thats exactly where i would look First, the plugs are bound to be dirty atleast a little bit unplug them scratch up the metal barb that the plug sits on maybe a little contact cleaner and give it a whirl.. atleast in my case that was the problem..

ok...... here is my issue.
when i bought the car i replaced the CD player and noticed the outlet didnt work, even though it was plugged in and stuff. so my buddy came over to look at it and we saw that it had power, but it wasnt grounded. so he re-grounded it and when we went to try it out, it lost power, so now i havbe no idea what to do. its not getting power, and i dont know what to check first.

BTW, the fuse is good.
any help would be awesome, and thanks in advance!!

Yea, turns out, it was tucked *way* back there. We tested the connector area and it had power. after we grounded it again, the power was lost.

just use the FSM to locate a wire you can tap from (after one of the accessory relays i think) and rig your own wiring. as nice as it is to 'keep the stock wiring' sometimes it's just too much of a pita and you'll get better results faster doing the wiring yourself.
