The max broke down today

I was gonna get the clutch fixed next week when I got my tranny mount in the mail. This sound was getting worse and worse.

Stopped at a stop light. Started going, let off the gas because traffic slowed down (at a green Fawking light). It bucked, and jerked and made a HUGE "clunk" sound. Pushed the clutch in for safety reasons (so I wont damage something... although I bet I F*CKING DID!!!!) Tried to move the stick and would only stay in the "N" area, it would not go into any gear.

Coasted into a parking lot (luckily the State Farm Agency was closed, so I wouldn't be in anyones way) and turned off the car immediately. Get out the car and there is a trail of fluid behind me and a big a$$ puddle of Tranny Fluid under my car... I mean it was just pouring out.

WTF happened?

My theory is:

The throw out bearing is bad(was), let off the gas, clutch shifted and broke the **** out of it. Flying pieces of metal in a clutch/tranny = bad Im pretty sure. But how would it make the Tranny leak SO bad.

Gonna jack it up tomorrow and see where exactly the fluid was coming out of. Ill take some pics too. I have a video too, its on my GF's phone. (yeah she was in the car with me... coming back from the mass after buying her shoes, a dress, and some jewelry. To wear tonight for our 2 year anniversary) Which was a good night except my car' tranny blowing up on me.

Got it towed. Ha... Triple A... is not free towing, well it is.
Free towing up to 5 miles. Every mile after that is $4 extra. My dads house was EXACTLY 5 miles away ahahah.... that worked out well.

-Should I buy a new tranny?
-Rebuild this one?
-Part it out get a new car(maxima)
-Replace the clutch and see if it was my shift linkage or something little like that

Cant believe this freakin happened

Cliff you selling your VE-5?

id say go for a rebuild. ur gonna have to pull it either way. might as well do a rebuild since it is cheaper. or try finding a used one with decent mileage.

sounds like you busted the metal sleeve that the throw out bearing rests and slides on. if this is the case you can either weld it back or get a new case. rebuilding the transmission isnt to hard. other than that since our cars dont use the pilot bushing, it is possible that when the clutch threw apart it jerked the input shaft and tore the seal and gushed out fluid, while its running now does it make any noise?

when you tried to shift was the shifter just plain rigid or was it making a clack (synchro dogs smacking) when you tried to shift? if it was clacking for every gear you may not have a terrible amount of internal damage. If it was just plain stuck... then you probably can go ahead and dig a 6' hole for that tranny.

if you get a NEW new car, wait until the 2009 max hits the lots. It's the 7th gen and promises to restore the Pride & Honour 4DSC designation. Or so they say. However, nothing has been said about a possible revival of the 6MT in SE trim. Nor has anything been said about drivetrain layout. I suspect RWD is a consideration on the design team's part but don't count on it; they want to keep sales up for the G35/37.

Man, did Alex install your tranny or something?

Step off of that Jump to conclusions mat, the most you're probably looking at is a new tranny and clutch.. Engine still runs right? No reason to dump it imo.

Dude that max was CRAP! lol:
High idle
only driver back window worked
bad pass wheel bearings
leather was "tore up from the flour up"
but the best was the transmission... it was SO SMOOTH!!!! lol
and no VTC clack

Well, Ive decided to fix it in my garage, get a new tranny and do it myself (I was going to have someone else install the clutch)

My roommate is letting me borrow his Explorer in the mean time

sorry...

It was rigid, since I bought it. I told my friend, he said "its part of owning a 93 man." I guess... 3rd USED to grind... but after changing my tranny fluid with a flush, that went away.

The max I drove today had such a SMOOTH shift and clutch was so light... man I wish mine felt like that ha. except for the light clutch

well mainly i was trying to get you to reveal what happened when you attempted to shift but it was 'stuck in neutral'. If it smacked in all gears you might still have an OK tranny just with a leaking case. Because you can't put it in 1st without pushing the clutch, and your clutch is dead. But if it's not even smacking the synchro you do definitely have an internal problem. I was just trying to think that there is a chance the tranny is mostly OK, just that it has a leak that needs to be addressed (such as torn seal at moment of clutch failure or something)

He's going to have to remove the tranny any way,so why go round and round about what the problem could be?

We will all know soon enough.

I already know..

Have you removed your transmission yet? If so,where did all the gear oil you lost come from,a hole?

If the bell housing is broken(like i think it is) then i doubt the company will accept it as a core.

i found a guy who allowed me to do the removal and install of the tranny myself. i brought him the tranny and he rebuilt it for $450. he was a former nissan tech too, three years later still running strong.
of course if yours is damaged beyond repair that is of no help. +1 on the hole...

IMO,no $1150 is not a good deal, hell dude your whole is only worth about $2000-$2500 on a really good day,why put $1200 into a rebuilt unit when a good used one from a salvage yard for about $300-$400 will do just fine? If you insist on going with this company,i would ask them what EXACTLY has been replaced on their rebuilt units.

Here is my theory on what happened, your severely worn clutch/pressure plate assembly exploded, causing pieces of it to fly around in bell housing and knocked a hole in the casing.

I would remove the old unit before buying a transmission, just to see what actually happened in there.

Yeah $1150 is a rip off for a tranny. There are plenty of these cars in j-yards in Tampa and you should be able to get a tranny for a lot less. You could pick up a whole new 3rd gen for that much money.

What color is the VLSD fluid?

OK well, I havent found or chose a transmission yet... But Im still looking.
Im also going to try and do the tranny swap myself with some help from friends.

You think I could do it?... Estimated time? Special tools or tricks that Ill have to do. The thing Im most afraid of is separating the axles and then re attaching them. The FSM made it look so damn EASY.

have a universal joint and various socket extensions on hand because it is a bit tricky getting the top bolt in and out off the bracket that holds the passenger-side axle
