Wiki what about the starter relay? Should I replace this while I'm at it - it's very cheap.

I'm going to get back to the starter - right now I'm replacing all 40 hoses.

I had the same problem this weekend and had my car towed to Midas. I was just coming out of my driveway put the gas of get half way up the street and the car died. It wouldn't start back up. Well when they 1st say it they said it sounded like it was out of timing so they were going to check the timing belt. Of course this happened at 3:30 and they close at 4 so i just got the call this morning and they said that it was what turns under the distributer cap had come loose and was out of timing. So it was a timing issue but not the belt. They didn't even charge me a penny. Thank god it wasn't something more serious

Wow those mechanics sound like angels. They didn't charge you? Here they charge $80.00 just to drive the car into the garage.

Are you sure you're not getting any fuel? Got air?, Got Spark?, Is your distributor tight@ the base?

yeah my distributer is tight all my wiring looks fine starter seems good everyone is telling me fuel pump and my friend took off my fuel filter and i tried starting it and there was no gas running through the line
that would kind of explain why it would just died out while i was driving it

Its good practice to swap the solenoid before it goes. Its contacts spark every time car is started - and build soot /burn until nostart ... intermittent nostart problems may start at 100k.

VERY easy.
pull up rear seat bottom.
undo four bolts
check for voltage at connector
undo pump if voltage is present with ignition on.
install is reverse

no, as automar said, right under the rear seat. voltage is found using a multimeter and checking the pins.
my fsm is unavailable, or id post a pin out...

forgot to mention to depressurize the fuel system. pull the fuse for the pump, and start the car, let it run 'til it dies.

well the fuel will only come out the top of the filter when the pump is running. you'll get nothing if you've cranked the car and either a) pump wasn't working or b) filter was clogged (cranking car relieves pressure if no more fuel is coming into the rail). but the pump puts out WAY more pressure than the system needs, and the rest of the fuel goes past a pressure regulator and back to the tank.. meaning the pump is capable of like 80psi... and there are VERY few clogs that can totally clog a filter with fuel at such a high pressure. so i'm guessing you aren't even getting fuel to the filter.

Do you think it's bad to pull the fuel pump fuse while the car is idling? I found that when I tried to start it sometimes, with the fuse pulled first, it wouldn't start and burn a bit then chug out.

When I idle the car then pull the fuse out, it does go for awhile before it chugs out..maybe 5 seconds.

yeah i meant i will replace the fuel pump because its not getting fuel to the filter when i crank it.

The pump cost me quite a bit...I think $325 or something...maybe even a bit more...it was a BOSCH pump, but I think there are other brands that were cheaper.

damn! why is the VE pump so much more expensive?! 190/160 =/= 345/245 meaning the pump is disproportionately expensive

Yes it's annoying - i looked everywhere and some places were quoting me $400.00 CDN for the GXE pump. But the DOHC pump was like half the price.

I do it again, and I get NOTHING. I do it a third time and it starts healthy. Other times today, I would go to start it and all I got is the click sound. Then try again and then healthy start.

Any ideas? I put grease on the battery post, connectors, and connector on the starter before I tightened everything down, to minimize rust, and I'm going to try and remove all the grease to see if that makes a difference.
I am also having a starting issue at times. I just replaced the starter, and made sure all connections at the starter were good. I thought the problem would be over after installing another starter. Sometime when I go to crank it, all I get is the accessories and the dash lights, radio ect, but NO start. Im assuming that the ignition swith is at fault, but I dont know. I thought it would have been the starter connection, because it did this when I had the original starter on. So It has to be something else.

Well I am still having the same no start issues. I replaced the ignition switch, replaced the starter, and swapped fuses for the ignition switch. Still have the same problem. It is starting to get annoying and a little embarrassing to know that im trying to fix the car up and still haveing these little issues with it. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

There are only few things left in the starting circuit: if you could disconnect thin wire going to starter and jump it directly to the + of the battery it should turn on the starter and it should start cranking. The key doesn't even have to be in ignition. If this works then all you left with are: interlock relay/switch (manual) or inhibitor relay/switch (auto) and bunch of wires (very unlikely).
