From what I've heard the VG's redline is set conservatively. It doesn't have alot of power up over 6000rpms but that's cam related if I'm correct. Someone told me something like the valves start sticking open or something around 7000rpm and thats the first real problem from overreving. Course if you had some fancy pants cams and a nice aftermarket valvetrain there probably is some power left to be made. Though if you are going that far I'd hope that you'd have forged internals.

but if you cam it the idle will suffer. which... if all you want is power then you won't care a whole lot about a suffering idle. or you could just be the first one to pioneer a variable valve timing advance for the VG and see how that helps. or computer-actuated valves or something like that. but you'd only ever make it worth the money if you could produce a system like that and sell it to other orgers... because the one-time setup costs would be pretty big for you to just do it on your car

na i don't plan on going up that high.
it's just that one time i rev the ve so high (was stuck in snow) the rpm gauge reached to about 6700 maybe a little more then thats when that happened.

Not saying that I'd personally do that. I like that my VG can comfortably idle a hair or 2 over 500rpm. Though there are plenty of people who don't seem to mind. In fact alot of people I've known get kinda nervous around cars with uneven idles because it's a characteristic of engines that have been cammed for some crazy top end power

example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sTVwrOjMn4

Personally there are alot of things I don't want with the Maxima. Top of the list is a rough/high idle and backfiring.

well i've come up with an idea for variable valve timing on a VG, i just don't have the real in-depth knowledge to make it work. but i'm sure if i made a little sketch of it, someone could figure it out, or point me in what direction i should look to find out. I know there's a range within which you can modulate timing on a VE, of course, that is what the VTC does. but what interests me is if this can be done to the same degree-extent on a VG or more or not as much... ovbiously you can cam a VG, so they must have left a little extra clearance in the stock cam profile... the question is how much, and can modifying the cam timing relative to the crank timing (as the VE's VTC does) could unlock any topend power on a VG.

That would be horrifically complicated and expensive. Nissan's design team of highly educated and talented engineers all but screwed up designing the VTC system for the VE. If you really want variable cam / valve timing on a VG, buy a 300zx with its VG30DE.

Good idea...I'm dying to see the day when someone stuffs it in there and has to fab up a custom hood to close it.

It's a shame really that we can't just stick the VG30DE heads on our blocks. Something about the water passages being completely different. That, and I think some modifying would have to be done; the 300zx was timing chain, right?

It's not really a shame. I'd think it would be easier to just swap engines.
