ve exhaust sprockets on the intake side?

ok well im at work on a break so no time to search for this sorry.

ok well i have my vtc things grounded and for a month no probs. then about 2 weeks ago they started to tick again just as bad as before or realy close. and now the engine acts as if it has a huge turbo down low as in under 3000 rpm and it surges all the way through the power band. is it because of the vtc gears moving and causing iratic cam timing? also how hard is it to swap out the exhaust sprockets to the intake side to get rid of the vtc sprockets because it would only be around $100 for the new parts with the exhaust sprokets and upwards of $600 for the vtc ones. and im almost broke.

any insight???

Just buy the VTC rebuild kit and do that for $50 instead. you'll get the full function of the engine back the way Nissan designed it.

but there in lies the problem. it will eventualy go bad again then i will have to do it again and i dont want to have to pull it out and rebuild it only to find out that i screwed it up when i can just (hopefully) throw exhaust sprockets on and never have to worry about them again.

eventually... but that could be years down the road. not to mention the loss in performance... and possible loss in MPGs.

The VTC's are not as glass-like as people like to think. If you have a fairly low mileage car (for a max<160,000) with good oil and a good filter, expect the repair to last a long time, most likely the life of an at least 14 year old car. If you have a high mileage motor (>200,000) running on crappy oil filters and crappy oil, expect the repair to be short lived, but if it wasn't maintained anyway, more will fail before the vtc's again anyway. Most vtc's start clacking over 100,000 miles, so they aren't doing all that bad to begin with...

Disclaimer (I know the mileages are off, people have lovely 200,000+ motors) but the average used car at that point is a bit worn.)

The first set of VTCs lasted 100k + miles. rebuild them and they'll last another 100k+ miles.

The car is ~15 years old now, so you can expect to get another ~15 years out of it.

are you really worried about a $50 part failing on a 30 year old car?

+1, Also... 100,000 miles is a pretty conservative number... I have 155k Miles and they just started clacking on and off recently. Barely audible once warmed up.

better way is to rip open the axle boots and dump some baby powder up in there. that'll make enough noise to overpower the VTCs

just so every one knows im not afraid of the part failing its the fact that i have never rebuilt one before and im flat broke so if i screwed it up id be opt of a car and a job.

although i think that if i can rebuild an engine i guess it cant hurt to try

so does anyone have a part number and place i can get the rebuild kit from?

also is the kit just for one side or both?

and sorry for taking up another thread over the damn vtcs but i dont think well at work

your dealer can order the kit.
each kit does one side.
it's not hard to rebuild them, it's mre of a pain to get the timing set right IMO

Follow the TSB to the letter on tearing stuff down and cleaning the ports in the head. absolutely critical to making sure they don't go bad again.
