There has been a tick under the left valve cover for a while, only while cold, and it sounds like a lifter to me.

I read the autozone instructions, and it doesnt look like a very difficult job. Should all of them be replaced on the entire cam, or just the problem lifter? I'd rather just do one, gets real expensive otherwise, but if doing it right means replacing all, then so be it.

Any tips/tricks/advice from those who have done this repair? It will probably be a few weeks before I actually get around to it.

You sure it's not a broken exhaust stud? VEs are susceptible too...

lifter tick is possible as well, but I'm concerned about maybe valve stem or rocker arm itself wear. then again if the rocker is ticking, it's because the hydraulic lash adjuster (not a lifter, but close enough) isn't doing it's job 100%.

Changing them really isn't hard- you just have to know which one to change.

you may also try pulling them all out and flushing the old oil out via the FSM procedure. it's messy, but may solve the problem or may point out your bad adjuster.


all that said, I used to/should still do have a pile of used 'lifters' out of a couple of parts engines. if you want 'em, I'll be glad to let you dig through the pile and find some that'll work. those are parts that don't generally wear out with mileage- they might get gunked up and stop working right though.

i'd suspect the HLAs just because he said it only ticks when cold.

 

Which is the same reason I suspect an exhaust stud.

I have a whole set of hydraulic lifters if matt cant find his junk.

 

Replaced a broken one on the front a year and a half ago, two in the rear almost a year ago when I pulled the motor. They are all still in place.

I'll come and dig around just in case though, will you be around much this weekend? If it cools down enough then maybe you can listen yourself.
