seperate vtc's with a clamp+sockets!

this may have been done by someone else but....
(i also searched "vtc c clamp vise") with no results?(i will edit in the sizes)
i took my old spare vtc's and my my heavy c-clamp and a exhaust connection pipe
i had laying around and a socket to seperate the vtc assembly(no hydraulic press needed) it wasnt even alot of pressure(they werent just loose either)they are also easy to "press together" using this method

just match mark them( it may take a test fit or two on reassembly since they twist together instead of straight in )
install the new spring and cap and "no more sound like crap"

i will rebuild the vtc's eventually in my 92 ve,but it doesnt have vtc noise that bad yet and its only been @ 22,000 miles and almost 3 years since I "told it to work"

? did i hear anything on here about vtc rebuild kits having short springs(bad)sometimes?

As far as I know from the few people who have 'rebuilt' them, they start clacking again within a year. Some people as few as a couple of months. In fact, I'm not sure if I recall somebody who rebuilt them and the clack DIDN'T come back, but I could be misremembering

Although, I do remember Aaron finding a difference on some of the rebuild kits, some of the kits come with a "shorter" spring and apparently those are more prone to failing again very shortly

isnt there only one "type" of rebuild kit though? Does the difference lie amongst the oem's or any ftermarket kits? Maybe its luck of the draw that one would wind up with a shorter spring

I remember Aaron did a bunch of research on this. IIRC it was just purely the luck of the draw with the shorter spring. I remember Aaron confirmed that Courtesy (I believe) in fact had the desirable kits (with the taller spring). I didn't know there were any aftermarket kits?

I didnt mean to claim that there are aftermarket kits, (typed that up this morning still half asleep at work) just trying to round out my point that maybe there could be a spring length difference if you get the kit from vendor X versus vendor Y (Why id like to find out... tolerance issue? or are they not manufactured by the same source?)

If in fact the courtesy kits are what aaron found to be the right one, ill keep that in mind in a few weeks when im ready to get mine... i also remember Matt saying to get them from Dave B/southpoint nissan. I was going to try some of my local dealers

I rebuilt mine around 13K ago. They only make a noise at startup if I dont start the engine for 2+ weeks, and even then it goes away in seconds.
