Tachometer works....sometimes

So i replaced a VE motor in a 94 maxima i bought from another maxima.org member. It went fine, the car runs and the transmission shifts. I really don't have any mechanical problems, but electrical is a different issue.

Once we got the car to fire up and drive on the roads i've noticed the tachometer doesn't work. No biggie, i bought another gauge cluster and replaced mine figuring it was something with the tach, but i replaced the gauge cluster and that tac doesn't work either. So it must be a wire. It only works when you apply the brake or use the turn signal. It also kinda jumps when you are starting the car but as soon as the engine catches, it stops moving.

Any ideas on what the problem is? Also, i recently removed an aftermarket alarm system from the car the previous owner installed. Could that have something to do with it? The tac hasn't worked since i had owned the car. Thanks for any help

Strange, but it could be due to the alarm if it was tied into the tach signal. many of the ones made in the last 10 years or so have an antitheft feature as well as ones with remote start.. they all tie into the car's speed sensor and/or tach wire. my old Clifford tied into both.

It may also be a bad ground somewhere. could be in cabin, could be in engine bay. hard to tell.
