Max iS back on the Road with a new problem!

Well I finially got my Maxima bak on the road after sitting for nearly 6 months and me trying to figure out what to do with the car. Didnt know if I was gonna junk it, sell it with a bad tranny or just buy another car and forget about it. But I said that it was hard to part with a car that I know so much about and can fix so many things on it, and it has taken me sooo many places with no problem. Its been the best car that Ive owned! So I got a tranny installed and she runs like a champ, as a matter of fact she runs so much better than before!! But now that that problem is fixed. Another problem has come up. I noticed that there is a wierd noise coming from the front of the car now. seems more near the driver side, but I cant really pinpoint it. Its more noticeable when I am going around 5mph or almost coming to a stop. It seems like something is rubbing togather. It doesent sound like a wheel bearing, it sounds more like when a 18 wheeler puts on their brakes( that loud noise they make) exept the noise is not as lound on the car but is noticeable. I am wondering if the wrong cv joint would cause this noise. My car has ABS and the mechanic swapped cv joints and they look kind of different to me, but I dont know if that could cause the noise I am hearing. Seems that the axle could be the only likely place that the noise could be coming from because it wasnt making the noise before the tranny died. Plus my rear struts are completely shot, and the car rides great but feels pretty unstable at highway speeds. So Ive got my work cut out for me.

could be a couple of things, brakes dragging, something wrong with the trans, cv-axle, wheel bearing, tire.

well the tires are new so it cant be that. Plus it cant be the wheel bearings they seem to be good, I have all disk brakes and they stop pretty well, ill probaly take a look under there and see if something is loose, it kinda feels like the strut on the passenger side is loose, needs to be aligned plus ive got to change out that passenger side control arm bushing. Oh well I cant complain.

Alignment could solve it.

Do they teach writing in schools anymore?

Well it kinda sounds like maybe its the driver side wheel bearing but just to confirm that I am right,I will let someone else look at it to be sure its not the CV axle. I dont want to waste money buying parts and I still have the same problem. The cv joint came from another car. I dont know if the joint that comes from a car with ABS and one that comes from a car without it would still work? I dont know, but if thats not the problem, then I will see if its the wheel bearing.

CV is generally a clicking noise, I assumed you meant the high pitched noise that comes from a Semi when they are braking. I'd have to go with Benstoked on the brakes dragging. If the Caliper isn't letting go when you let off the brakes it will drag on the rotor until there's more movement from the rotor and it brakes free. Throw some brake dust in there for good measure and it makes the sound you describe at the times you describe it. If it's been going on for a while it'd be noticeable in the wearing of the pads. Rebuild or replace the caliper. I'm new to the 3rd gen max though so maybe something different, that's just my experience for what it's worth.

Well I dont know if its the brakes dragging because i never had an issue with them before the tranny died on me and the car was sitting for 6 months. Before then they workd fine. The noise sounds like something rubbing or grinding togather. Its more noticeable at low speeds of less than 20mph. Its less noticable at higher speeds but I can still hear it. I guess Ill start with the process of elimination by first checking the brake pads on the driver side. The CV joint doesnt click or anything nor does it have any boots busted so Ill assume its ok, but ill have someone look at the wheel bearing on that side of the car, then Ive got to replace the driver side axle seal. The dealer wants $23 bucks for one. Does that sound about right? I thought I heard someone here say they were somewhere like $5 dollars?

It is still possible that the brakes are dragging, especially since it sat, rust can develop and cause a sticking issue. However you just said you still hear it at higher speeds but more noticeable at low speeds, I thought you meant you only heard it at low speeds so it's less likely the dragging brakes, but still check the pads to make sure, that's free. Wheel bearing sounds like the most likely culprit based on that. $23 sounds about average though sometimes you can have the bearings repacked and not need new bearings, that may be what the $5 thing was about. I generally only buy parts through Dealer or NAPA, if I spend the extra money my car seems to treat me better.

I am such a
check the metal splash guard on the rotor. make sure it has plenty of clearance away from the disk. that is easily the cause of the symptom, and easy to overlook (see? I did, too).

And to think I deleted where I said unless something is rubbing against the rotor cause I thought that had to have already been checked.
