It's not the chain that fails in the VE engine...it's almost always the VTC cap breaking that causes the failure...

 

No I didn't hear a thing.....Just one second b4 it made a loud pop, but the belt never broke in half.... The little stud for the tensionser spring looks like where the abrasion took place, I would have heard it rubber against the rear timing cover.......1 damaged valve man I'm lucky in that aspect.....could've been worst!!!

 

I know, I didn't say the chains were the main cause of VE failure. I said there's a better chance of eventual destruction with a chain driven engine, simply because they don't require replacement, meaning the chance of it lasting forever are slim, there's a lot of links in chains that require proper lube, any of which can break and cause destruction with the right amount of wear. The more moving parts in any machine, the more chance there is for failure.

 

I see you gettin down sista, but what's that pipe right there. We look forward to seeing how the new belt sits before you get it covered up.

Welp the VE is such an exciting animal that I'm willing to forgo it's shortcomings. Maybe a spare engine will be my short list. I see a few nice ones at the JY.

I have a spare VE engine, two spare VE 5 transmissions, spare injectors, tons of coilpacks, along with all sorts of other spare VE goodies that I've been hoarding over the years

 

That pipe is to a huge beach umbrellla, it was hot as hell that day....Guys....all jokes to the side! That's my niece....She's in Mechanical engineering and was just hanging out with her favorite uncle as the engine was partially torn down with the help of her and my dad who loves this stuff as well....I thought it would be humorous to see this young cutie building engines and cars. Guys, there are some chicks out there that can build some monster horsepower engines....or turn wrenches better than most guys....I used to contract work out when I had huge inspections on the 2 aircraft I was maintaining in Hawaii, 2 techs would come from Oahu, to the Big island..... anyway one of the techs was this really nice looking chick who was an awesome aviation tech.....She held her own all the time....

Suction strenght could be greater (that means worst for you slow ones) but only 1 valve was bent......I waiting on parts (gaskets, valve springs, valve, etc) for now!

Ever think of upgrading to '93-94 cam and crank sprockets while you're in there? Better belts (100k vs 60k) and fit the grooves better/improved fitment IMO.

Those are the round teeth right....It quieter too...yeah that's probably gonna be happening

 

In my experience, the "round tooth" belts are not any louder or quiter. However, I have heard and personally worked on vehicles (VG's) with the round tooth belt where when the belt became loose or worn, there will be something like a VTC noise at the distributor. I've never witnessed or heard about a square tooth causing noise at the distributor.

I would hope others chime in on this observation and either challenge or confirm this.

 

Me? - I think the reason why round toothed belts are often the current flavor is a basic technical one wrt the design of the belt and material properties .......................... a round toothed belt have surfaces that contain way less "localized stress points" on the teeth that get "stressed" in a non-uniform way - as a round toothed belt does its work, the teeth mesh in such a way that no particular "edge" or part of the teeth carries more/all of the load for any period of loading - a round toothed design will transfer the load smoothly over the whole face of the round tooth. With a square toothed design the edges imo will invariably do more work than the rest of the tooth's surface and will probably lead to shorted service life specs for those.

ITO stretch/elongation in any of the designs ............. I can see no reason why the one would be better than the other - they are actually both designed to stretch as little as the current manufacturing technology allows - my guess is the actual "working face" material in contact with the pulleys wear some and that gives a false sense of stretch ................. that working face wear will eventually imo determine the service life of the belt.

Comparing the same motor with a round vs square tooth designed set of pulleys and belts with the same amount of service life on it all set up by the same guy to the same spec ............... me? - I have yet to encounter such a situation - in general properly setup belts of any design I find to be quite quiet.

 

hmm.. I've replaced probably 15 timing belts on 3 gen Maximas, plus another handful of hondas and toyotas and never had a noisy belt when they were done right. I see no difference between the round and square tooth as far as a reliability or noise standpoint.

but that's just my opinion, and we've all got one.

 

I said that because my Shelby Charger has the same upgrade option stepping up from the square tooth to the round tooth belt and one on the benefits was lower noise with the round tooth....So I'm sure there are many small advantages worth looking into and upgrading.....I've done so many different timing belts on different cars as well, I can't count them all.....

 

I don't know if changing to round from square is "sensible" money spent though - most of us petrol-heads/gear-heads keep a pretty tight ship when talking maintenance so we are often looking at and replacing the belts way before their suggested service life is due ................... so what is really gained in reality? - you lose a lot of beer money while getting to brag that the timing belt you now have is 0.2dB (?) quieter than before even though the alternator and other belt tensioner pulleys and water-pump noise all render that "improvement" totally irrelevant.

Technically I would however go along and say that if you already have the pulleys then change them

 

Getting those round timing component won't cost me $20.....Used!

 

In that case I would also forgo a beer and fit them

 

Pulled the shortblock to address a leaky rear main seal since I'm down and R&R the seal, plus reinstalled the shortblock....was gonna upgrade the valve springs to JWT but Ben(JWT) stated OEM springs are good for 7000 rpm which is
my redline/cutout limiter....no need to spent xtra $$$$!!!!Drop off heads tomorrow!!!!

 

Talked to my machine shop tech and he found 4 bent valves total....the most severe one is what I found, but the other 3 were still able to set on their valve seats, but they were slightly tweaked......So I'll be waiting on that.....

 

Sounds great still wanna drive it with that JWT.

seeing this thread made me change mine early, it was 7 years old and had 90,000km on it. i thought it would be really worn but the teeth were just a bit rounded, it would have lasted to 120,000km i bet. better safe than sorry i guess, i just basically got my engine rebuilt while it was out

 

Heads are ready and coming home today.....Been working now 3 weeks straight no days off, so I'll squeeze the time to reassembly this topend @ night time.....Can't wait too hear my baby pur again!!!

 

Take plenty of bug spray if you're working outside!! The skeeters are NASTY down here right now! They're so bad I can hear them swarming at the front door just waiting to come inside and eat me alive. little bastids...

 

That and these DAMN CRICKETS! They starting to make me like roaches.

 

Yeah they're out here, but not to bad.....they spray every night with the fogger truck over here.....not that big either....I'm sure Pearlands are country style mosquitos!!!! Big enough to pierce thru jeans and definitely T-shirts.......

 

well its not the first time ive heard about the tensoner stud problem.
alot of times the stud rusts and breaks off and belt pops and bend valves.
