A/T leak - pls help - see pics
Out of the blue, my A/T on my 91 GXE just started leaking. See pics. Does anyone know what this circular part is? It's on the front side of the A/T, just below and to the left of the battery, and just above the starter. Has anyone experienced this and fixed it w/o a major overhaul? I would obviously like to avoid a tranny rebuild. Thanks.
view from under the car. the leak itself is highlighted while motor running for a few secs

That is the brake band piston. Looks like the o-ring wrapped around the retainer went out. I don't remember but I think it can be done without a complete rebuild, but you will need a lot of patience to take out the snap ring with not much room to work with. Not 100 percent sure though.
Might as well change the other o-rings and clean out that piston while you're at it.

The piston controls the brake band (which controls 2nd and 4th gear). When pressurized ATF goes through that area, the fluid pushes the piston which makes the brake band grab a hold of the spinning drum inside the transmission.
Since you got a leak in the piston, there's not going to be enough pressure to hold the drum. So no 2nd or 4th gear. And don't even run the car with that big of a leak too
I just remembered a couple of things after reading FSM. There is a spring inside the retainer which may make things a little hard when replacing the o-rings and putting it back. Just gotta push it hard enough for the snap right to get back in place.
Also, I hope the dealer has the o-rings available separately because AFAIK the other way to get them is from a transmission rebuild kit ($$$).

Thanks guys, and akurtzer57: good luck w/ the rebuild, any pics or further info would be great.
Below are scans (or pics - dont have a scanner) of the Brake Band and Servo diagrams from the FSM pp. AT-118 for reference.
