Wheel Stud problem

Took the car to a used tire shop and they stripped my wheel stud. The guy can't speak english, but he was able to point the sign that said "Not responsible for broken/stripped studs"

Feeling defeated and abused, I went on to Autozone and picked up a couple of studs and some spare lugs. I got home and read here about how to replace the studs. Got my car jacked up and the brake assembly off. Pounded the stripped one out. Noticed another one didn't look healthy so I decided to replace it too. I had no washers, so i figured the rotor would work as a spacer to press the studs in. First one goes in with no problem. Second nut goes on and apparently the stud stripped(the side that's supposed to press in). That's just a guess because it's spinning no matter what I do. So I go to remove the nut and on the way back off, it get's stuck. Now, I can't keep the damn stud still to get the lug off. I can't come up with any ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I've done something stupid here one way or another.

Thanks!

grab yourself a disc grinder and some metal cutting discs. cut the nut and the fubard stud off and start again.
if the wheel stud is stripped, most likely your lugnuts are damaged too. replacements are a couple bucks each and most parts stores carry ones similar to what you have already, so you should be able to find something that matches for not much $$.

Next time, grab a few 12mm washers and a regular 12mm x 1.25mm nut. use that to pull the stud into place without the brake rotor on the car. that way if something like this happens again, you can just grab the back of the stud with some pliers and hold it while you remove it.

also USE ANTI SEIZE!!!!

Thanks! It didn't cross my mind that the rotor would be in the way.

I read in some thread about putting the studs in the freezer for a couple hours to help get them in and using loc-tite on the ends. Is that a good idea?

I've never had to mess with any of that. done right, the studs just press out and press in. it's something that should onyl need to be done once in the life of the car, so it's not really a wear issue.

Im with Matt on this one too - its a simple match-up of the splines on the new stud with that in the hole in the hub - no need for extreme cooling and fitting techniques - just fit a nut in good condition and tighten (after small application of anti-seize like Copaslip to the stud's thread)

stick something bewteen the rotor and the spindle axle and add a little prying force and back the nut off the stripped stud..... or cut it off like Matt suggested!

Getting ready to replace my wheel bearings and just wanted to say FYI:

The damn stud is spinning again, but it's the hole that is stripped, not the stud. Odd.

Get yourself a new hub. Www.autocenter.net or www.courtesynissan.com

Is it the 13 or 14.3mm knurl?
If it's the small one, drill out the hole to the next larger knurl size (use a 9/16" drill bit), and buy a new stud. voila.
