Faded Side Moldings?

Does anybody have a quick fix for this problem? My 91 Maxima (white) has side moldings that are faded and look yellow. It didn't use to be so bad, but now every time I wash the car it looks dirty still because of the moldings. Does anybody know a cheap way to paint or remedy this problem? I have tried many cleaner waxes and products. Any help would be great. Thanks

1) remove them and leave off
2) remove them, sand down, repaint and reattach

What should I paint them with? I am not too familiar with do it yourself painting products. Thanks

check out http://www.paintscratch.com/ . people have used their products with great success. if you've never painted before i wouldn't suggest making that your first project. Get some help from a friend or something.

you can check out http://maxima.cardomain.com/id/chris91se to see pics of my car with the moldings removed...

My yellowed side moldings are also driving me nuts. As far as removing them goes, what technique did you use? Did you just gently pry them off? Also, as far as looks go, what is everyone's opinion on removing the moldings?

Re: Faded Side Moldings?

mine were doing the same a little last year. alot of people remove them, but i just dont think it looks right without them. i taped them off (no need to remove)and sanded all the paint off and got them real smooth. got some paint from autozone that matched(check your paint code to get exact match and then look in the books they have at the store to match it up). then just primered the moldings and put a few coats of paint on. and clear coated them. they came out perfect looks like brand new. match up nice with the stock paint.

i think it looks good without side moldings. it would look better if you were to fill in the indent too after you take em off, itd look alot smoother......only need some body filler right?

Depends how deep the indent is, since I'm fairly sure it's not good to use Bondo over a certain thickness (it gets fragile). It might tell you how thick you can apply it on the box or in a book about bodywork (or maybe even those Chilton manuals?).

yea i know that sometimes it can get to thick and the paint wont adhere and brittle and stuff but if that was the case u could just get steel plates and cut em to te the size of the indent then weld em in sand down lil body filler and presto well not really but u kinda get the idea

yeah, i would stay away from using bondo on stuff like that. body filler is only used to smooth the body out a little when removing a dent or something, like 1/8" imperfections. if you apply it think its gonna crack and not turn out well. even if you do get it to be smooth body filler tends to break down after 5 years(well, atleast according to import tuner)

I took them off and don't miss them...

Check out my website, I left some detailed info on removing them on there for anybody that's thinking about removing theirs.

I think my car looks WAY better without them. I just recently got around to getting the last of the adhesive off the doors, and it looks great!

It will probably take just as long to remove them as it does to paint them, so you'll have to decide which way you like the best. Have fun deciding!
