hid projector/e36 hi-beam hybrid
the 3rd gen forum is depressingly dead, and since ive got some of the parts i need for my next project i thought id share..
even tho my headlight retrofit turned out really clean; it just doesnt do it for me, still like the look of an e36 conversion better.
i bought some e36 projectors, "zkw"s that use H1 bulbs for both the low and hi-beam. the hi-beam reflector also has a 194 bulb inside of it. i put these exact headlights in one of my old 3rd gens..
i plan on moving the projector/shroud combo out toward the corner light, and more forward in the housing
then adding the hi-beam reflector from the e36 headlights. because it is a shallow H1 reflector, even with the bulb in it it should fit inside the headlight without having to do any modifications to the car. I am going to have to modify the headlight housing and bracket a lot to get it all to work. but I believe I can pull it off without having to make any changes to the radiator frame.
Im planning on making some kind of removable door on the back so as to get to the H1 and 194 bulb in the hi-beam reflector, but most likely the headlights will have to be removed from the car...

HID lighting in halogen reflector headlights that weren't designed for HID lighting will blind oncoming traffic and drivers in front of you as well. A properly aimed HID projector retrofit will not blind anyone. Big difference.

Sell me them for super cheap
The new D2S' are going to come out soon. They should now be on par with the latest gen MH1s which are fantastic.
I imagine FXs being a squeeze in there with what you have planned but have never messed with 3rg gen lights so I could be wrong.

I finally got some time to do some trimming on the hi-beam reflector, had to take a good 1/2" off the top of it so it would fit in the Maxima housing. these pictures here are just the reflector and the projector shroud being held in place with small pieces of butyl. so nothing final here but this is what the finished product would look like more or less
what do you guys think?

Want 2 see finished project...one of my clear glass lens was crushed in an accident. I've been so down about my 3rdgen since that happen...I doubt I'll ever find another driver side clear lens. I had to put the original lens back in yesterday so I could drive her and it looks terrible plus the lighting sucks in comparison. DMad keep up the good wrenching!!

Wow, that is tight fit. You'll need some room for adjustment unless you plan to "aim and cure" at once. I didn't read the previous post, but did you try TSX. TSX is shorter (heigth) than the G37, which will give you room up/down for you vertical and rotation adjustment if need be. Looks like the width is OK.
Pretty involve project you have there. I would invest in a good mounting bracket rather than epoxy and glue to button everything up. Better longevity and easier to fix/future mod.
