For brake pad squealing could putting

tar(small amount) on back of the pad be used or would the tar catch on fire with the high temps created from stopping.

I know this might sound stupid but we got a bucket of left over tar.

Just wondering.

No -->

The tar will not necessarily catch fire, but it will melt. If it gets on your brake pads you are looking at an impaired or failed brake system. Not good.

You can buy a tube of sythetic caliper lube for a few bucks that is specifically made for this purpose. It will not melt or leak out at any temperature. Use sparingly nonetheless.

And the next time you replace the pads, get the OEM Nissan pads with the hardware "shim" kit. In the three Maximas I've had, I've never had Nissan brakes squeak.

I'm not sure what this "lube" is ppl mention, but there's a common silicone-like product (Brake Quiet or something) that you apply to the back of the pad, let partially dry, then install the pads. It mildly bonds the pads to the caliper/piston and keeps it from vibrating.
