i was installing some new rear speakers and and a jvc kameleon head unit and i noticed that the factory speakers were connected to a harness that was connected to a little round box that looked like a factory amp or something..does any body know if that is what it is or have any specs on it..maybe i can use it to run some tweeters or something...

each bose system is equipped with a factory amp for each speaker. I think the amps are 50 watts. and they suck. dont hook up your speakers to them either. bypass them to new speakers. and dont bypass to the bose speakers, put new ones in and bypass. I have the kamelion too its nice

You have the active speaker system I think. It is in between the base model, and the Bose stereo. On this system, the head unit powers the front speakers, and the little amp powers the rears. The problem when installing a new head unit and speakers is you have to bypass this amp, or your rears will be really loud. Hope this helps.

the "active speaker" system is the Clarion stuff. it is the base system in our cars. you could also get one with a Cd player, but the rest of it didn't change I believe.

the rear amp you're talking about it pretty small.. probably on the order of 10-15W.. maybe 20W max.. when our cars were built, stereos weren't designed with much power.. you never saw anything over 25W in a head unit without seperate amps, especially in a base model, OEM stereo.

as for bypassing it, I've got the wire colors on my website.

there's the link..

I wouldn't recommend using it to power any tweeters or anything.. that amp is a "cheapo" amp and isn't very clean.. you'd be better off buying a small used amp for $50 or so and using it to power some tweets.

No wonder...

No wonder my d*mn rear speakers are so loud. I got the rear speakers hooked up with the harness from Crutchfield. The sound coming out of them sounds terrible, but I figured it was the $35 speakers I have. I also have to fade the sound 10 pts to the front if I even want to hear the front speakers. Thanks for the diagram Matt.

You also have to take into consideration that the amps were designed specifically for bose speakers which are supposed to have lower impedance and therefore have more power pushing the bose speakers than a 4ohm aftermarket (supposedly). Two, the Clarion Bose head units are non amplified. By installing an aftermarket deck and not also putting in High/low converters, you are sending wattage into the amps instead of low output volts, thus making the speakers really loud! Install a high/low converter and that should solve the loudness problem. Otherwise, you may burn out the bose amps.

Gregg or Matt (or whoever)..When I got my Poweracistik 694's hooked up in the back, the factory bose amps are still there and not being used. It there a way to get rid of them, or are they permanently attached (for like the factory alarm of something?). They just sit there and are always in the way! Please Advise!

I don't think they started putting in alarms on the stereo systems untill around the 4th gen. I have an '89 so I can't say on the newer Max's concerning the alarm/ stereo relationships. But, even then only the deck should be part of the alarm, as when the deck is removed, it won't work outside the car, right? So, in answer to your question, the amps can be removed. I've removed the front ones and the rear are completely disconnected. If you have the 6x9's in the rear, the bracket is needed and the housing for the amps are part of that, but, the amps can be removed from inside. I'm going to do this myself and install my Bose system in my '66 Ford truck. Help?
