Replacing Bose...

I read some earlier posts and am having issues with my Bose system. It's been cold lately and the stereo isn't coming on until the car warms up(it seems) the radio is on and everything but no sound, then a loud pop and I'm back in business. So I think I need a new hu or fix this one. I'm leaning on just getting a new since this cd player skips and is tempermental(aren't they all). I have the cd tape combo and If I buy something else with just a cd I will have a gap. Is there something out there that I can get to fill this in, a tray or plate to cover it?
I read that I need to get some adapters for the speaker wire so I can still use the Bose speakers, is this correct?
Thanks for any input... Just want to confirm what I need to do.

Suggestion
In my profile, I state that I am going with an Eclipse head unit since I absolutely refuse to pay $235 just to fix the display on the current radio. I can suggest 2 things by Eclipse that will fill the bill (or hole in this case).
a) Eclipse has a double DIN unit that has Cassette and CD integrated into the unit.
b) You can get a regular Eclipse Head Unit (e.g. 4441) and couple it with their in-dash changer.
I thought about doing the latter to Maxine but I kind of like my cup holders...lol

double DIN
The doubles seem to be more expensive. I have a 10disc changer that I want to hook up to it also. It's one that runs off of a radio station(87.1 or something like that). So I don't even really need a single cd and who knows if it's worth getting a tape but that might be the cheaper way to go.
But I'll still have the gap.. Maybe I should get the cup holders from you...(lol)
Are you able to put the tray back in with a DIN? I would think so. Maybe that would work for me.
What do you know about the adapters for the stock bose speakers?

Answers
a) As far as the Bose Speakers are concerned, I would not know since mine has the "Active Speaker" System.
b) I agree with you on the price of the double DINs but I would take a gander at the Eclipse 4441 and the 5962 in-Dash changer.
c) Naaah. Can't part with the cupholders. Maxine's tray serves as my cupholders and added coin storage.
d) You should be able to retrofit the tray/cupholders in there with no problem. go to http://www.courtesyparts.com to get the kit.

Out of curiosity, what is the "Active Speaker" system?
The Eclipse stuff looks nice but don't want to waste the cd changer I already have. I'll have to find a tray kit somewhere to fill in the gap.
Plus I don't want to make this to expensive. Start with the hu and then move to speakers when they go.
Thanks for the tips...

before you replace it...
I'm not a Bose fanatic by any means but before you go and spend all that money, go to http://www.davescoolstuff.com. This guy, Dave, fixes Bose systems. I have sent my CD player to him because it had the same problem yours does, I also have the CD tape combo. His turnaround time is 24 HOURS! I paid a little extra and got mine back within 2 days (I paid for him to send it back to me UPS overnight). I sent it to him overnight and the next day he sent it back to me. He does EXCELLENT work. My CD player NEVER skips now, not even over large bumps. It only cost me $155. If you don't pay for him to overnight it back to you it's only $125. He can also fix that problem with it not working until the car is warm. His site will tell you why it does that and you can e-mail or call him. Trust me on this one. He also has a Bose Forum up that you can compare your problems with other peoples. You can most likely get it fixed for less than the cost of buying a new deck. Once you buy a new deck the wiring cost an a$$ load of money.
