tranny becoming less responsive

Hey, it seems that my tranny is becoming less responsive and takes longer to shift (obviously auto). Is that something that will be cured by a regular tranny oil change or is there something else to it?

Thanks

How long has it been since the last time you flushed your tranny fluid? If it's been quite a while, try doing that first and see if it gets better.

How many miles on your car?

i haven't done that yet, but the last time i changed oil (a month ago) they said it was fine. I've had it for 1.5 years and only put some 10k on it since then. the total milage is 84K

thanks

Normally the tranny fluid is changed at the 60K service, but this is the most often ignored item. I'd bet it wasn't changed, meaning your overdue.

I changed my tranny oil and the shifts felt smoother and more responsive. Plus it feels good to change dirty fluid

The dealer probably didn't flush it then, just a drain and fill.

I've seen ranges from $80-$150. Pretty steep considering you can DIY pretty quickly.

How do you flush it completely yourself?

Draining the pan will usually yield 4 litres, the whole system is 10 litres. If you want to drain and flush the whole thing I posted this earlier on another thread when I installed a transmission cooler. Drain the pan first, replace plug and refill with 4 litres or the amount you drained out. Do not start the engine. You need to disconnect the hose from the transmission to the radiator.
I used a 1 gallon clear windshield washer jug, put the end of the transmission hose in the jug and get someone to start the car and then yell when you want them to stop, it comes out fairly quickly but not enough to force the fluid out the jug top, but make sure you hold on to the hose and the bottle to keep it steady. It takes about 15 or 20 seconds to get half a jug which is what I did and then refilled and did another half a jug till it came clear. It took 10 litres for me. I have read that some people did it in 1 gallon increments and others 1/2 so I did the half.
I did a cooler install at the same time so I had a long enough hose on the output from the transmission to easily run to the jug but the stock hose is short so might be advisable to put a longer one on or attach an extension to it.
Also just put back in the same amount you take out and then run it a while after you are all finished. I found that the stick showed low at first but came back after a short drive so I was glad I didn't add the extra litre I had purchased.

My trans with 76,000 miles had a shudder on shifting. I had the fluid changed back at 30,000 miles and thought it was just plain dying at this point. Took someone's advice and had the full flush today. Cured the problem. Paid $119.
