I had the same thermostat problem with my (just purchased) 95 Maxima. It didn't take me long to replace it thanks to this forum!!! (Thanks guys!!!)
Anyway - I wanted to update this so people would know exactly how to do it.
All I needed was a 10mm socket, a socket extension and a phillips head screwdriver. You don't need to remove anything to get to the thermostat. It's located on the passenger side of the engine - just follow the hose back from the radiator. Got the 'stat from the dealer ($12 bucks). I used the existing gasket cuz it was fine and didn't drain the coolant. I didn't even have to add any anti-freeze. Easy job

Brian
Really
My car seems to keep a funny temp too. I was thinking about changing it. It's above the coolant line so none escape?? If so i might do it this week.

Replaced thermostats
Micha /Briguy -
I'd be curious to know what milage you have on your rides. Also, is this your first replacement? I'm on my 3rd thermostat (110K miles 95SE).
Briguy - did you happen to notice what was wrong with yours?

Briguy?
Hey thanks for the info, very helpful, but...
ummm... are those Chevrolet Cavalier *PLASTIC* hub caps on your Max? Cuz that's what they look like.
Please say I'm wrong. Maybe it's just the angle of the picture. Yeah, that's it. NO one would ever THINK of doing something like that, right?
(uneasy pause)
No offense, man.

I have 105K miles. I have the old thermostat in front of me. The plastic part that slides the valve up and down around a brass-colored shaft apparently has been warped out of shape over time, so there are scratch marks in certain places. This is probably where the thermostat was sticking open. Then, if I idled the car for a few minutes, the heat soak in the engine bay would cause the plastic ring to expand and then it would pop back into place and work normally. No more of that, though.
dmbmaxima88 - I was real careful to keep the hose as high as I could. Look at the puddle in my pic - thats all that leaked out.
mo'max - mine has 77.5k on it. Only had it a week. Problem with mine was the car never would heat up. Temp gauge never moved and the heater was a waste when it was freezing.
justmax - No you didn't!
Yes - those are plastic hub caps on my car. I just bought it about a week ago so it's stock from bumper to bumper. Only thing I've done is the 'stat and replaced the stereo. Gimme time man.
