Weighed my 96 SE today = 3240lbs

My car's weight with me in it was 3240lbs. I weigh ~185lbs and I had the spare tire, jack, 25lb tool kit, ~10lbs of other junk, and ~1/4 tank of gas on board.

96 SE 5 speed
moonroof
Bose
power seat
stock 15" sawblades

Mods:
WSP stage I SFCs (~25lbs)
VIM
WSP y-pipe
Stillen B-pipe
HKS intake
UDP
FSTB

Estimated race weight without me in the car and 1/4 tank of fuel = ~2990 lbs

Yep. It was a "Cat" scale. I just rolled up, pushed the intercomm button to tell them to weigh, then went inside to get my ticket. The scales usually are about 60-70 feet long and have 4 seperate weighing plates for the axles. A Maxima will fit on the first plate.

That's pretty darn good. My car, with little to no gas and no spare weighs 3280, without me in it. I weigh another 230lbs, making my race weight over 3500lbs.

Those are 'weigh stations', they are run by the DOT to check trucks to see if they are over weight. A public scale can be found at many truck stops, CAT is just one brand of scale. Public scales can also be found at gravel pits and other places where trucks are loaded. You might be able to find one in your phone book under 'scales' or 'truck scales'. Usually it cost about $8-10 to weigh.

In addition, most drag strips have a free use that you can use.

At first I thought that was really heavy, but then I got thinking about it. I factored in approximate weights for all the stuff I take out of my car (and my mods like CF hood and lighter wheels) 1/4 tank, etc, and I come out to 3180 with me in it... and I'm a lame 145lbs... In track trim with me in it it's 2905 with 1/4 tank.

Are you guys weighing at the track or on certified truck scales? FYI, track scales don't need to be certified.

How in the hell in the GXE so much lighter? It's not like the GXE doesn't have less sound deadening (like there's that much on a Maxima). The only difference between my car and Sprint's GXE is that I've got 25lb SFCs, a moonroof (~20lbs), a power seat (~10lbs), power antenna (2 lbs), BOSE (~5lbs). I'm seeing about 65lbs in added weight on my car. Where in the world does the GXE loose the rest of the weight? It just doesn't make sense. Me at 2990lbs and Sprint is at 2830lbs. I'm seeing about a 100lb difference.

Some other factors also include leather/all power seats, moonroof as you stated, non-BOSE speaker system, no ABS unit, manual tranny, ect....

I am thinking about it too, I don't see where the GXE weighs that much less either...

I think my car tipped the scales at about 3100 lbs with a full tank of gas and about 200+ lbs of crap inside (I was moving), so I'm probably around 2900lbs empty. I had to weigh it so the government could pay me to move after I got out of the Marine Corps...

BTW, I think all maxima's (4th gen at least) have a power antenna...

Not bare-bones GXE's. Not that it weighs that much anyways.

Then I guess its not as bare bones as your can get.

My 97 GXE, with NO options had a non-power antenna.

However, I think we're splitting hairs if we're considering the weight of the antenna in this discussion.

yup 95-96 had the power antennas on ALL models, then the super lightweight race version of the Maxima in '97 (GXE ) didnt have it

This still doesn't solve the 100+lbs missing from the GXE AFTER considering the moonroof, power seat, etc. My SE is a 5 speed and does not have ABS. The aftermarket leather weighs nothing.

SO can someone please tell me how the GXE is so much lighter? Are you guys weighing at the track or on certified scales? Please inform me to what is missing on the GXE to make it 100-150lbs lighter than an SE.

I think sprint's 2830 is without him in it... if not thats one light Max. Without me my Max would be 2770 in track trim, and 3040 in street trim (full tank of gas).

Contributing factors:

Pass seat -45
rear bench -10
lighter wheels -35
cf hood -30
spare -35
trunk carpet -5
trunk cardboard -5
1/4 tank -90 (compared to full tank)
ypipe -10
jack and hardware -10
floor mats -10
removed heat shielding -10
SFCs +25lbs
RSB +10
FSTB +5

My slicks will shave another 12lbs but I have not weighed the car with them at the track.

So 95 (45+10+30+5+5) or the 100lbs that Dave's looking for is in items that you did for weight reduction (seat, rear seat, cf hood, trunk stuff) that most people don't bother with. Meaning, without the cf hood, if you wanted to go hardcore at the track, you could lose about 65lbs.

Good to know.

Without me, another 12 gallons of gas (~6lbs/gal), without any weight reduction (spare tire, jack, floor mats), I'm looking at:

3240 - 185 (me) - 35 (tools, towels, CDs) + 72 (12 gal gas) = 3092lbs

Factory "dry" weight for a "96 Nissan Maxima" as listed by the City of Overland Park, KS is 3005lbs.

They have a guarantee that if you get a ticket after getting legal on their scales, they'll pay the fine. Thus, they tend to weigh a little on the heavy side to avoid having to pay peoples fines. We always get drivers calling the office worried that they're overweight. 9 times out of 10 they're okay.

Hey ejj, what do you mean by heat shielding. Are you talking about the stuff down the exhaust corridor. If you have removed this have you seen any bad results, like it getting overly hot under the center console. If not I'm gonna remove this stuff. I already took off the cat gaurd/heat shield and rear section heat shield. So far that is about 3Ibs. I would like to drop the next seven if there are no downsides.

By the way ejj - the spare is only 22.8. Ibs.

Well, don't quote me on this, but the 95-96 Maximas are heavier than the 97-99. I think I remember reading somewhere, that they dropped a 100 or so lbs off the engine in the 97-99s.

You're confusing your Maxima history here. When the 95 Maxima came out, it weighed 100 lbs less than the 94 Maxima, or 3rd gen SE. The 97-99s are definitely heavier than the 95/96es. All 95-99 Maximas have the same engine, an all Aluminum VQ30DE. Class dismissed

my car weighed in at 3,298 without me in it. I had 17" OEM rims, sub box, half tank of gas and maybe 5-10 pounds of junk, no weight taken out. I weigh about 275 so I'm starting to understand why i can only RUN a 15.5 at the track with almost every standard bolt-on installed

LOL!!

spoiler, heated seat modules, foglights, other electronic components missing from gxe. oh, and my SE has 'upgraded cold weather package' which includes a bigger radiator.. I assume that the one on a GXE is smaller and lighter, probably by a lot too? This is just speculation, so don't take it as fact.
