strange noise when lightly accelerating

I'm getting a weird noise coming from what seems to be right under the driver's seat when I lightly press the accelerator. This is best described as a THUNK THUNK type of noise.

What could it be?

I have a '95 SE with 190K miles

Do you have a stick shift or an automatic cuz it seems like the heat shield might be loose.

What would it matter if the heat shield is coming off? You mean on the exhaust/cat? Hm, sounds more supsension realted, but may also be your tranny showing its age.
