What is the best air filter for PL Cold Air Intake?

I know it comes with the :monster flow filter", it seems to be alright-and the people from Place Racing said it's the best when I called them up. But I dont really like "foam" filters...should i get K&N? Help me out guys. What do you suggest huh?

You are asking a question that will give a multitude of answers that could all be right.

Its like asking whats the best brand of nitrous, oil, tranny fluid, etc

Everyone has their own opinion and when you get them all you still won't be any further ahead than you are now.

Apex'i apparently has been shown to have better flow characteristics to the traditional cone of the K&N. Either will work, just don't get one with foam that will deteriorate and get sucked into the engine.

Well..Thats not true, I just went to the Apexi web site and they only make filters for the 240sx, and the 300zx! Im pretty upset- it sounded like a really good idea! But at the end of the list it said "Universal Replacement Filter (Filter Only) 80mm." So what does that mean? Is 80" 3 inches ( i dont think so ) because I know the filter has'to 3 inches. I want apex so what do i do.

personally do you think the K&N is better than the foam monster flow filter?

Since K&N is made of cotton, I soak it in a bucket with laundry detergent. It gets pretty clean.

My K+N looks brand new after I clean it out...I use the cleaner kit, and re-oiling kit after, and it just looks marvelous...However, with my engine bay being so dirty, my filter gets filthy ever 2-3k miles

You might try one of those K&N Precleaners that slips over the filter to trap the big stuff... either that, or cut the leg off an old pair of panty hose and tie it around the filter. If it is installed behind the foglight hole (with no foglight) a shield would help protect it from direct 'hits'.

Good Luck!

I've been happy with my K&N. I clean it every 20K-30K miles and it still looks great.

A cheaper alternative might be the BOMZ unit with a new K&N filter. I don't think I'd trust any of the cheapo filters out there on my maxima.

I'd still add a pre-cleaner/pantyhose and an airshield of the foglight isn't there.

Good Luck!

GUYS PLEASE, BACK TO THE QUESTION

What do you guys think is better keeping the monster flow ""foam" filter or getting the K&N Filter. Agiain i went to the APEX website and they dont make filters for maximas, just for the nissan 240sx, and 300zx. Also how much does a K&M cone filter cost?

I am sure Apex'i makes universal filters. Ask Steve at Frankencar what he uses.
Also, check out this website for filter comparisons. Apex'i wins hands down.

The universal filter at 80mm is 3.149inches (25.4mm per inch). it is just barely larger in diameter so it will probably work fine.

K&N cone is about $40.00

As for the Apexi...

The test says the Apexi is a dry type (no oil), never needs cleaned, and lasts a lifetime.

How's that?

I guess you could make the same claim with the stock paper filter... It will surely need cleaned or replaced from time to time, and since it says you don't clean it, you buy replacements.

How much do these things cost? I like the idea of these filters not needing oil so there won't be any accumulation on the MAF, but I don't want to get in the habbit of replacing $expensive$ filters every 10k miles.

Let's see, a Bomz setup (made from aluminum by the way) for around $65 shipped, plus a top of the line filter puts a person in charge with a top notch CAI for around $100!

Thanks!

K&N vs MF dyno again

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=132358&highlight=dyno

I think the question shouldn't be what the best filter but rather what the best intake is for both low and high RPMS.

I would be curious about the Apexi performance though.

Does anyone know what the biggest K&N that will fit comfortably in the fenderwell is? Anyone know a good place to get K&N filters cheap? And I second the suggestion about ~$65 Bomz CAI plus ~$40 K&N.
