My Max won't start!

Recently, I had a turbo upgrade. It would fire up first time every time until I went to pick it up last night. I bypassed the entire turbo system with a cold air intake to make sure that it wasn't the turbo or leaks in the I/C, but it just won't start! It turns over and over, there is spark from the coil packs. The unusual thing is that when I turn the ignition to ACC, the fuel pressure gets to about 40 psi. When I turn it over the pressure drops to zero. I can smell a lot of gas in the system - like it's flooding. It threw codes, but I cleared them accidentally and can't get it to throw any codes again. I have checked for leaks and MAF issues. Could it be crank position sensor?

Does anyone have any ideas? Can't wait to get it running again. It's probably something stupid!

Seems like it! I checked the resistance and they were 10.8 ohms. I am going to get an oscilloscope on there and see if the PCM is cycling as it should or just dumping fuel through there. I find it hard to believe that all of them would be stuck open too but anything is possible I guess.

My vote goes to one of the crank sensors.

So it still won't start. I just ca't get it to throw a code. It just gives 0505. No one has any thoughts? The fuel pressure thing is not accurate. It can't measure the pressure while cranking ... not enough juice to run the sender and gauge. I am getting spark and fuel ... it's flooding like crazy right now though! Plugs get soaked after a few cranks.

I had the exact same symptons on my buddies I30. No codes, crank all day with no start. Fuel was being dumped as well, flooding the engine. Totally stumped me... We even saw the low voltage ignition signal with an oscilliscope, but no start. Towed the car to Infiniti and they replaced a crank sensor. It was the sensor way under the car looking at the flywheel. I don't remember if that one is POS or REF. If one is working and the other one isn't, you still can get a spark signal, but the timing is incorrect. Thats why the car can't start. Completely fooled me.

Check both crank sensors, I bet one of them has failed.

won't start

I had the same problem or close to what you got.0505 was the same code also.Took it to dealer and cost $268 to change the crank sensor.Up and running now.So check that.

I checked all the sensors. The Crank (POS I think ... the nearest the flywheel) I am sure was bad. I replaced that but it still has the same problem. Do you know which one you replaced? There is crank REF also which is close to the pulley. I checked resistance of that one and it seemed to be OK.

Anyone?

My wife picked up the car when it was done so I'm not sure as to where it was located but she said somethin about it being underneath the engine at the upper corner next to the air filter. But I'll ask her again when she's off of work to make sure so I don't send you on a mission.

What about the cam sensor in the timing chain housing?

It's got to be one of those sensors, Cam or Crank(POS or REF) thats giving you the no start condition.

Please keep us posted!!!!!

Thanks to everyone that replied. I made friends with the Nissan Service Manager here ... super nice guy! Well, it turns out that if you stall the car on a very cold day (which it was here) not long after you started it, the engine computer runs super rich. It completely flooded the combustion chamber (completely soaked) it seems that on many other cars (including EFI) if you hold the gas pedal open (more than 40%) and the car doesn't turn over, the injectors shut down, and the chamer is just left to drain. Nissan decided not to do this in case the engine starts, over-revs and runs lean. I just left my plugs out for a few hours, cranked the engine for less than 15 seconds with the plugs out, reinstalled the STOCK plugs and left the fuel pump fuse out. As soon as it started, I put the fuel pump fuse back in and it ran like normal ... well some back firsing cos my wastegate is stuck open for some reason, but anyway, it's all good .... damn this cold weather ... it was like 10 degrees out that day! Anyway, if anyone else has this problem, hope this helps you out!

I am going to enjoy my new turbo!
