disconnecting battery

As another option to reset my ECU, does the battery need to be disconnected for 24 hours? Or can it be overnight?

i myself don't understand the whole reset the ecu thing for every mod. I mean, our cars do have sensors, so the sensors will tell the ecu what to do...

I think it's just become one of those long-time myths that has developed on the org...a lot of our knowledge is based on the first guy who contribues something new, and I guess when one person said it, easy enough, everyone started beliving it.

uhm, depends on the mod and how it affects how many sensors.

I randomly disconnect my battery overnight and read the ECU the next day just to make sure no codes pop. Probably every few months or so.

You guys need to read the very helpful info in the stickies and use the search function to find out WHY and HOW this works.

In a nutshell, the ecu in our cars is not a pentium 4 running a 1.5 GHZ. It mostly monitors and feedsback info given by the slew of sensors. Depending on the sensor and it's reliability/speed, depends on what the ecu does. There are many sensors that the ecu only monitors and changes nothing. There are others that based on readings OVER AN EXTENDED AMT OF TIME let the ecu know to do something. Only a handful of sensors make the ecu change anything immidietly. Resetting the ecu basically sets it back to default status which sometimes either helps the ecu "learn" a new mod, or just speeds the process for certain sensors to get new readings made by that mod and adjust accordingly.

Very true. As for resetting the CEL always do the screw not just unplug the battery.

Billy - For unplugging the battery to reset the ECU, it needs to be unplugged for a FULL 24 hours. Overnight will not clear any codes.
