problem, hearing a whining noise please help

I have a 95 auto maxima. when i'm driving between 20-60 mph i hear a whining noise (kinda like a turbo sound), it sounds like it is coming from the left side of the driver. But the thing is it only when i push on the gas. has this hapened to anyone and what kind can i do to fix this. Please help.

Thanks Mike

Do you have a popcharger style intake? IF you do you are probably just hearing the air passing through the throttle body when it is part way open creating a whissle effect.

Just a thought about possible transmission noise based on whining and location of sound. I had an older maxima doing something similar and after a 500 mile trip one day the tranny just went completely out, lost all gears, lucky it happen just as i got off interstate and was just a few miles from home. I drove all that way knowing transmission was whining away and almost made it home.

if you have an intake...could be that...however my intake doesnt whistle from 20-60mph...that would get annoying...you cant hear mine until you get on it...But i do have a whistle at a certain RPM in the lower gears...sounds like a turbo (I WISH) spooling up, but on a quiter scale...

Shorten your sig length, it's annoying to scroll so far .

Back on topic, my car whistled like that when I had an exhuast leak at where the y-pipe comes down from the motor.

Get a friend, open hood, have friend step on gas and rev engine( make sure you are in park or neutral). Listen for whining noise. If it is an exhaust leak it will be present always. If it is only present when drving, not an exhaust leak.

How about Alternator whine? Is it coming from your speakers or from the car?

With your K&N filter, make sure the air box is properly seated. If the filter wasn't in straight there could be air leaking and creating the noise. Can you hear the noise with the windows open and closed?

Check what he said, I have alternator whine and it sounds just like what you mentioned, could be your speakers fooling you :P

my frankencar actually does that...it's right at 2000 rpms at 25 mph+ or so....it does sound pretty neat, but it's not supposed to be that way. I'm just gonna make sure my vaccum hoses are tight and go from there.

ok as the condescending bastard of maxima.org id like to fix your problem in effort to rectify my lost image. as your driving lift your right hand off the steering wheel slightly so its in the vertical position parallel with the side of the car (its roundish i know just keep with me on this one). bring it over to your chest and smack that chick in your passenger seat. the whining will stop for a moment. if it returns it will most likely be slightly loader. if so repeat as needed. don't worry its only a matter of time my friend. keep cool, later
