Rattling sound in 1st gear... tranny rebuild time?
I have a rattling sound coming from my first gear... or at least that is the only gear I notice it in. When I am coasting down a hill and the car is still in gear it makes that sound, it also does it when driving in parking lots at slow speeds. My car is at 143k miles and I just had an ACT clutch put in not too long ago, maybe 2 months. Also could somene give em a link to the page that has instructions on the tranny rebuild? Motorvate or something like that... Thanks any help is apprecitated.

What do you mean by rattle. Is it felt when you are under accelleration? Do you hear any gear whine or clicking ( Like a bad CV joint). Do you have any tran. oil leakage. The sound is only made when coasting. ( No load on the tranny). Never had that sound before I rebuilt my Tranny. Doe4s not sound like a bearing problem.

I think you described it best when you said gear clicking and whining. It's not a knocking sounds like a CV joint. I drove the car this morning and it does happen a little when under acceleration, it's just my intake covers the sounds a bit. There is no leaking at all. I hope this narrows it down a bit. Also what do you guys recommend for a replacement gear oil? Mobil 1 any good? and how much do I need to buy? Thanks.

Its sounds like ypur imput shaft bearings are going in your transmission. Mine went because of the metal shavings from the failing Differential bearings (pitted the input shaft bearings). I had a clicking noise that was the worst in first and then went through to 3 rd gear. ( the noise followed the speed of the engine and not the speed of the wheels) Got worse with time. You probably need to replaced both sets of bearingsif this is the case. Parts do not cost much but the labor is expensive. That is why I did my bearing replacement my self(was not fun). MY tranny is running better than it ever did though.
