i'm pretty sure every vehical has some kind of resevior in the gas tank that holds gas that the car never uses. This is for the bi-product MM was talking about. The stuff in there is really bad for your engine components but I don't think the fuel pump even has access to this gas, or at least it didn't in honda CRX's.

unofficially, the "low fuel" light seems to come on when I'm down to 2 gallons (18.5 cap)...always think i'm at the brink, and when i get to the gas station & fill up, there's usually 1 to 1-1/2 gallons left in the tank...

I can't believe you guys let your cars run that low on gas. Whats the point? When I get near 1/4, I just fill it back up again. Leaving your tank that empty, with day and night time temperature changes will cause condensation to form on the gas tank walls. Over time that can lead to poor performance, problems with gas lines freezing in the winter time and a good chance your gas tank may start to rust from the moisture.
As your gas is depleated, air enters the tank. If you live in a humid area, that air contains moisture. We all know that moisture and fuel don't mix.
Don't let your tank run that low, it's just not good for the fuel system.

What njmaxseltd said.
I tried it once to see if my low warning light would come on, it did when I was dangerously low and stuck on a country road with no gas station for miles![Smilie](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I would not do it again .... 1/4 tank and I fill it up. Isn't the fuel pump itself 'cooled' by the gas you have in your tank, since it's submerged in it?

It's wierd that this thread came up because just the other day I hit the E for probably the first time. The needle was just touching the E and it ended up I had about 3 gallons left.

I just got 30~ after my light came on a few days ago. This includes a lot of 3 mile trips back and forth to work and a couple longer trips. I got so close to running out that when I hit the gas, the car would surge forward then stop like I took my foot off the gas over and over. I ended up putting 17.5 gals to fill it back up.
Also, the light didn't come on until the needle was below the empty mark.

I have driven my car with the low fuel light on plenty of times. I have been calculating my gas mileage and filling up every single time I have gassed up for the last 9 or 10 months and I get consistently 19 to 21 mpg with my driving (70% city 30% hwy with WOT every now and then). I reset my trip odo every time I drive. So I know that if that light comes on when I have 280 miles on my trip odo that the light is just bluffing. At 19 mpg and 18.5 gallons I could get 351.5 miles. So I'll let the light stay on forever until I get to around 320 or 330 miles on my trip odo. If I don't have time to get gas I'll drive another 10 or 15 miles before I chicken out and get gas.
Another thing, though. Like somebody else said, the fuel pump is at the bottom of the tank, right? So any junk is continously filtered out when you run the car, right? And as for the condensation. I have heard of that before. But realistically, how much water per unit volume of air could there be in a gas tank? A millileter? I don't think a millileter of condensation in 18.5 or even 2 or 3 gallons of gas is gonna make a world of difference. Correct me if I'm wrong...I'll be waiting with my thermodynamics book.

My car ran out of gas when I test drove it. The light didn't come on, the needle was on E but the slaesman said it was fine. I got about 1/4 mile before it died, had to push it to the side of the road and walk back to the dealership. I drove it home the same night
