How to disconnect speedometer?
How to disconnect speedometer?
As stated in a earlier post here , I have a faint whining noise at 80-90mph only. Took it to a dealer and they said they won't under any circumstances go over 60mph, or be able to diagnose it with computers
. So I would like to find out if it's possible that it's coming from my speedometer?
Would it be possible to disconnect the speedometer and continue driving? If so, how hard is it?

The speedometer is not cable driven, if that's what you're thinking.
To disconnect it, unplug the harness from the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission. Your Haynes manual will show you where it's located.

Very easy to do, just a couple of screws and clamps. Should take you no more than 15-30 min to do.
1) remove the two screws over the plastic instrument cluster cover.
2) pry out the the plastic molding around the cluster cover( the dimmer switch and cruise control switch should be attacthed to it).
3) pry out plastic around ignition key and unscrew ignition covering( 6 screws underneath the steering column. You don't have to do this, but it makes it much easier to pull the cluster out. once the steering column is removed you can easily pull out the plastic molding surounding the cluster. also remove dimmer and cruise conectors plugged into the molding.
4) to remove the cluster, unscrew the 3 screws holding it in. once the screws are removed you should be able to see behind the cluster and reomove the connector for the speedo.
The only reason why i know all this is because I just took mine out today to install some chrome gauge rings.

Ok, wow, that's the hard way.
Ok Ok Ok...my dad and some nieghbor of mine were trying to rollback the odometer.....why I dunno I was outta town....I've been driving without knowing my speed for like 3-4 months now one of my firends took it apart and thinks they broke the wire or something....but damn I'd like to know how fast it is I am going....
In my GLE, when I disconnected the speedo, it didn't allow the alternator to run, so make sure you don't drive far, because it will only run on the battery reserve. I went about 25 minutes on my stock battery before it started to show signs of power loss.
Just have Jumper cables and get someone to follow if any longer than that. You'll have to connect the speedo and jump the car. then the alternator will work.
