Rpm?

I have a question.. Today I was driving with my dad on the highway and i was going 70mph. When i looked at my RPM it was at 2700-2800 somewhere around there. My dad says that is to high b/c i was in 5th gear. I just want to know what RPM yall are going at 70mph? Is something wrong with my car.?.Oh yeah i have a 96 5 spd gxe maxima..

Seem right. Our 5th gear is short thus the rpms are high.

Yea that seems about right. Although it might be a lil too high for cruising, its awesome to be able to pass cars easily without downshifting.

I never understood this; why would the 5 speed be geared lower than the automatic? You'd think that with an extra gear to play with the overdrive would be the same or even better, so that the car would be cruising at a lower RPM than would its automatic counterparts. However, you say you're at 2700-2800 in 5th at 70mph, whereas my automatic is pulling about 2400 rpm at that same speed. Why is this?

Thats why autos get better mileage on the highway. On the 5 speed Maximas the last gear is short.

Whats the best gear on the maxima? Which one pulls the hardest when you race?

Why such high RPM? Because us 5-speed drivers would be hella slow in top gear if it wasnt. I pull about 2900 at 70 with AC running. Seems high but gas mileage is a solid 27 MPG. Its nice if youre using the cruise control theres no need to downshift up hills as an automatic would do
