Need Advice On My Cars Future PLz Help

Timing cover gasket is bad and its leaking oil. It's leaking not even a 1/4 qt between oil changes. Nissan wants 1600.00 to fix and I dont have that kinda dough. I still owe 1,300 on the car, it has 120,000 miles and runs good. Its a 95 Auto, should I scrap it, trade it in? I'm depressed I had to post this I could not sleep its bugging me so bad. Thanks for any advice!!

If u trade it then the next buyer will probably ask you to fix that first, or knock off enough to do the work.

Where is the oil coming from? There has to be some other seal that is bad, like a cam seal or front crank seal?

Where is the leak visible from? Dripping at the bottom or sweating at the top?

If the work involves pulling the timing gear then I'd be VERY careful about doing that - (If you screw that up your'e looking for a new engine)

If it was me what I would do is buy a junkyard engine for under $1000 and swap it in. You get a lower mileage engine that will keep the car running for many more years than your current engine, and it's cheaper than the work nissan wanted.

NO the oil sending unit is fine it was replaced 2 months ago which is what I though the oil was comming from. Its the front and Rear Seal thats leaking, said I have to pull the motor drop both pans and all kinds of ****. He said its all labor, the parts where less than 300. O and should the water pump be replaced when doing this? They where tryin to say if you do something like that its best to replace it all. I don't know. I really am at a lost as to what to do

thanks

Thanks man 900 is still better than 1500 at a dealer. Did a dealer do the work? What type of shop should I call to do this type of work without getting ripped off? I live in Vegas

thanks

Yo Gumby, I live in Las Vegas too, Green Valley to be exact. Try this shop called Expert Auto, its on Boulder Hwy and Tropicana. Phone number is 434-7007, ask for Robert. They're respectable and they do good work and reasonable. My roommate have been taking his car to him for a couple of years now and I just started taking my car to him for major work. Charges way less than any dealer and will not screw you over with hidden charges. I would never in a million years let a dealer shaft me for major repair work. Not since I started driving a car. The most important thing to do when you are about to face a major auto repair work is to shop around and don't go straight to the dealer. If any, take it to the dealer and let them diagnose your problem. By then you'll know exactly what's wrong and you can shop around for better prices to get that problem fixed. Try them out!

Hey right on man I will give them a call. I also live in Henderson, not Green Valley more like horzion and 95. I will see I still think I should just look for a 5speed but I just paid the car off and now this.

I hear ya man! I'd probably be thinking the same way as you. But the freedom of not having a car payment is real cool. Plus if you've shopped around for a car lately, they aren't cheap anymore, new or used. You'd end up spending a lot of money on something you really don't like just because budget is limited. At least the Maxima is stylish and still has a strong appeal especially when you have it fixed up. Also try a couple of junk yards, I believe there's one called TNH up in North Las Vegas who carries a lot of import cars. Last time I checked (when I was looking for a Bose headunit after mine crapped out) they have a couple of Maxima's in the yard. You can probably get a low-mileage engine and have someone put it in for you. But before you do that, have yours looked at first and if the expense comes up to as much for an engine swap, do the engine swap instead. My '95 Maxima just hit 108k, but I just bought it a couple of months ago from a friend of mine. I also owned another '95 Maxima (Emerald Green) 3 years ago, and I put 200k miles into that car, same engine and tranny, no leaks whatsoever. I'm always looking out for a used engine and tranny just in case I need one in the future.

BTW, I'm nearby Eastern and the 215 fwy. There's another ORG member that lives up in North Vegas by the Nellis AF base. We should do a mini meet.
