97 SE repairs
I am looking at purchasing a 97 maxima SE but I have heard that maintenence and repairs on the car are rather expensive. After the purchase I will be going to college so I won't have a lot of money. If it has just over 100k miles and seems to be in good condition how well do should it hold up and if it doesn't for some reason is it more expensive than normal to have worked on? BTW its a 5-speed.

The check engine light isn't on at the moment so I won't have to do any ECU checks I was just wondering if the SEs are expensive to maintain and repair. I was told they were by a friend of my moms who works at a Nissan dealership.

They arent too bad. I got mine with 120k on it about 8 months ago and Ive put about a grand into it for repairs and maintenance. Ive replaced the tires, front upper strut mounts, and a power steering pump. The PSP was the most expencive, but I knew that was gonna go soon even when I bought the car.

i have a 98 SE auto which i bought with 48k a year ago and now it has 60k...all i have done is regular maintenance like plugs, filter, clean the throttle body, etc...other than that nothing wrong with the car..it's very reliable..

It's very expensive to repair if you get it done at the stealership, I mean dealership Check the ECU for ghost codes (like a bad knock sensor).
http://www.motorvate.ca is a good site for Maxima repairs. Just do the maintainance and small repairs yourself, and for bigger repairs go to a small shop (if you don't want to pay for it at the dealer). I get my repairs done at a small shop so it's cheaper. If you want OEM parts then buy them yourself and the small shop will only charge for labor
I just got new tires, axles, and a pulley & belt replaced. Now I'm getting a new suspension. Had no other problems.
I just started doing maintainance myself so I saved about a $100 in labor for that, plus about $7 each oil change
Good luck!

just cuz the ecu light isnt on doesnt mean there isnt stored codes, check it anyway, and see if u get an 0304, which is knock sensor and would be $100 + just for the part, knock sensor code will NOT trip the check engine light. if u get 0505 then ur fine, but anything else and u will have to do some work to fix it
