Wierd shut off problem
My car: 95 max se 5 speed
Yesterday i drove my car to the neighborhood supermarket and as i left and was about to take off from the stop sign, my car just shut off and would not start like the battery was dead. I did not stall my car out, it just shut right off after a little acceleration. Then i get a jump start and it runs fine, i drive a couple of blocks further and it happens again, i stop then start to move and it shuts off again. I again get a jump start and decide to pull of the ground wire on the battery to see if is a alternator issue, i pull it off and after about 1-2 mins the car shuts off. (there is also a bit of corrosion on both battery terminals.) I decide to take it to autozone and they run the test on my charging system and battery. The 1st test: I need to hold the rpm at 2k, after about 20 sec the car shuts off.
2nd test:He did not get a reading, so we jump started the car again and tried it again, again it shut off after 30 sec of 2k rpm's.
The autozone guy decides to just run it at idle and check the system, everything showed fine.
I decide to go to advance auto (car parts store) just to make sure because i was puzzled at this time.
At advance the car had no problem of maintaining 2k idle for a sustained period of time and again, everything looked fine.
I drove home without incident and was even more confused. I just decided to thorougly clean my battery terminals and everything seems fine with starting.
My main issues are:
1. The starting problem is most likely due to the corroded terminals, after i clean them, did not have a starting problem again.
2. However the problem of the just shutting off after it is started and driving puzzles the world out of me. An uneasy feeling knowing that your car can shut off at any time.
Any ideas, anyone ???
