New to the forum...

Hey guys,

My dad just bought an '04 Max. Before that, he was driving a '99 GLE. Now that he's got the '04, I inherited his '99. I gotta say I love this car. And yes, I know, I'm spoiled. Anyway, just thought I'd give a shout out and say hi to all my fellow Maxima enthusiasts.

You spoiled rat, I'm jealous. All I inherited so far is advice. Welcome and try to stay away from stillen, random technology, and yellow fog light bulbs.

Peace.

Stillen: O.K. ya got me on the bodykit, but everything else is grossly overpriced

Random Technology Catalytic Converters: They fall apart within a year be it the heat shield or the insides. For the price you should get more than a rebadged CATCO cat.

Yellow Fogs: None are yellow enough. Ugly huh? Yellow fogs look hot on the Lexus IS and GS.

The mods I won't do:
Altezzas
Spoiler
Rims
Blackouts

But I do want to get the windows tinted. As dark as I can legally have them. Then I want to mod the engine, but I am really not that engine savy. I'm just gonna do a K&N for now. I'll see what should be done from there.

i understand altezzas, but spoilers and rims are fine in moderation... blackouts? like solid tinting something, or ur head/tail lights?

What I mean by "blackouts" is darkened headlights/taillights. I have this philosophy where "if it doeesn't make the car faster, the stereo louder, or add to the comfort or safety of the vehicle, it's rice." So basically, I believe a 10-foot deck wing and 20 inches of aluminum serve no purpose and are just too ricy. I know there are some people on here who think rims are cool, but I just don't see the point in spending 2 or 3k on something like that. Just my opinion. Anyway, one of these days I'll get the windows tinted, and no I don't think that's rice because if i'm not mistaken, it blocks UV light, which is something nice to have. I'm a big fan of engine mods, but all I think I could do is a K&N. This car is definitely not going to run low 13's anytime soon. It is going to be my daily driver, so I don't need to cut back on mileage due to high-performance mods.

the no aluminum spoiler was just an assumed rule we have around here. no one is allowed to install them on a maxima. haha. basically the bottom line is make your car what you want it to be like... i dont understand how you can call diy black housing headlights rice?

I jsut don't see what function they have other than they change the look of the car. If they actually improve visibility, then that's great, but if not, what's the point?

Hey SOAD1983 welcome aboard and just remember one thing. Make your maxima the way you want it to look, not the way others do, very important remember that. Have fun with your new 99' by the way is it auto or 5spd???
Ciao

It's auto, tons of options, really nice car. And I can't believe how reliable it is. 120k+ miles in 4 years! My dad drove from home to Chicago everyday (1 hour drive one way), and all it's ever needed was routine maintenance. His first vehicle that I "inherited" was a Ford Ranger. Oh man what a POS that thing is. Even when he first got it, it had some major problems. I love the Max. But it just doesn't get the same female attention I hoped it would when I got to college. Too many of these F&F wanna-bes that are getting all the attention from chicks. Maybe I should paint my car neon green, load it with NAWS, and stick on a wing to make it more "aerodynamic." Then I'll get all the ladies.

Stillen makes a supercharger, and there are various turbo kits you can put on the Maxima. Be aware that if you do any of these big engine mods your transmission needs to be able to handle it. Maximas CAN run 13', there are a handful that do. I think a couple even run 12's and one in the 11's. There is alot more to do than an intake if you're into modding the engine, trust me.

With your extreme views of rice your car will never attract the ladies. Rims are functional, if you get light weight 17s or 18s. They increase the contact patch. Lowering Springs also are functional. With just those two you should get at least a fat chick or two, no more than that or you'll bottom out.

welcome man. the max is a great car, if you love it now, wait til u start working on her.and. i love my yellow fogs.. i dont know why people dont like them.. narva is the only company that makes yellow fogs yellow enuogh. and to go along with your only get it if it serves a purpose theory.. u get much better visibility in the rain or (hence) fog with yellow fogs. and rims and suspension mods are wayy fucntional and i advise you to do those first. maxima in stock form is a boat..its fast enough, but handles like a boat. what will you do with a fast car that cant turn?.i took my maxima on a top speed run before suspension work and let me say, changing lanes at 115 plus on stock suspension is jsut scarry. anyway.. happy modding and posting.

welcome to the org. Personally i like yellow fog lights. If they were white, they really are driving lights, and not fogs.

I'll check out the narva bulbs for my max. thanks for the suggestions

Ok, so obviously I don't know very much about rims and suspension. If they do make the car handle better, great, but another problem that comes to mind is that I definitely would not be able to install them myself. So, couple the cost of having someone else install them and the cost of rims alone (isn't it at least a few grand?), I probably won't be doing that anytime soon on my limited budget.

bigger rims use lower profile tires, and firm up your suspension, at the same time as giving you a rougher ride. Wider tires have better grip for handling, and a better contact patch for rain. Lighter rims give you better acceleration and handling (each pound of unsprung intertia is equal to 8 pounds of inertial resistance, 1 pound heavier rims, all 4 tires, is not 4 extra lbs of hurt to your performance...its 32) Suspension stock on a maxima is not safe for racing, sharp turns and high speed. Rims are very variable upon company, size, width and weight... all depends. Also, you can get cheap rims and tires for under a grand... a few grand is more along the line of volk racing rims (lighter than stock) with some nice tires...work with your budget

Maybe the spoiler and rims you speak of might help this...you don't have to get ricey spoiler and rims, IMO the OEM spoiler and 17-18 rims look awesome, no rice at all.
